Cost to replace serpentine belt? 99 Escort ZX2 Henderson, NV?

I have a 99 Escort ZX2. I took it to Midas to get the an oil change and coolant flush, and they told me it needed a new serpentine belt. They originally quoted me $105, but I didn't have the money at the time so I came back a couple weeks later. Well, the second time I went, they told me I was 'undercharged' for the belt and they tried to charge me $145 (total). The guy was on the phone talking to a guy from Autozone about getting the belt. When I checked the bill, I was being charged $56 for labor, and $70 for the belt. After doing some research, this repair takes 20 minutes max and the price of the belt on autozone.com was $21.99! I understand they upcharged the parts, but $150 an hour labor and tripling the price of parts in ridiculous.

Was I getting the shaft, or is this typical (or is it typical to get the shaft, lol)? Anyone else know a national chain that would give me better pricing, or a local place that won't screw me over in the Henderson, NV area?

Next time, spend 30 bucks on a 1/2%26quot; breaker-bar and $21.99 on the belt and change it on a sunny day. Labor I can see, but the markup on the part seems a little steep. They probably got it at Autozone

It seems every time I take my car in for an oil change or anything else they say that to me. I discovered recently when my son was a lube tech at Honda that a belt or any other work is considered an %26quot;upsell%26quot; and everyone from the lube tech to the mechanic gets a bonus.

Do you really even need it?

make a complaint to your local states atty general`s office file a fraud complaint. next time buy the belt and do the job your self, it can be done in 10 minutes and the cost including tools, should be under $40.00. they saw you comming, as stuck it to you but good. when you lift the hood, the replacement diagram and procedure is right on the radiator flange. when in doubt, dont be afraid to ask your friends and or relatives in the area, most would be only too glad to help, and a cold case of soda would be a lot cheaper than what you paid

Why does my 1999 monte carlo stall past 4 rpm?

I have a 1999 monte carlo, and I changed the water pump and serpentine belt recently and I did bleed the engine. Now when i rev up my engine in nuetrual when I get to 4 rpm it starts stalling. Any ideas? This car has 97,000 miles and needs a tune up soon, Could it maybe be the spark plugs or wires? Any suggestion would be appreciated.
Why does my 1999 monte carlo stall past 4 rpm?
your computer has a rev limiter to prevent engine damage. that i will cause your engine to stutter and try to stall when your in park or neutral and you rev it up past 3500 rpm. it makes the car idiot proof.
Why does my 1999 monte carlo stall past 4 rpm?
maby a fuel filter would help with a tune up....im not sure what motor you have...was the water pump driven by the timing chain?..maby that's not lined up correctly
It would seem that one of two things could be an issue. Fuel pump pressure or a severely loaded fuel filter that's restricting fuel flow.

It's a good policy to replace the plugs, wires, cap and rotor with genuine AS-Delco parts if they haven't been done in the past five years. Ignition coil issues can be tricky to diagnose. A GM engine analyzer hooked to your on-board computer would tell you if one of them was laying down on you causing cylinders to drop off. If one of the coils is faulty you loose two of the six cylinders.
Why are you reving it up while just sitting there?

That's silly.

ADDED:

Well, I guess you shouldn't just sit there and rev it up.

Does it drive OK??

I don't see what the problem is.
LOL.

It's just the neutral rev limiter kicking in?

OMG.

Why does my 94 F-150 break engine bolts?

I have a f-150 with the 5.0 engine and it keeps shearing off the bolts that holds the alternator and smog pump bracket to the engine. I changed the serpentine belt and Idler pulley and reinstalled the bracket and it did it again. Has anyone seen this problem before and if so how do I repair it?
Why does my 94 F-150 break engine bolts?
Check to see if you're motor mounts are worn or broken. This can make the engine vibrate and work harden the bolts leading to stress fractures. Alos make sure that its tuned correctly and not shaking from low or rough idle. Good luck!!
Why does my 94 F-150 break engine bolts?
ive had this problem with my 95 it was doing it when i cranked the engine over it when it first started it would shake violently causing it to happen fix the bolts again and then have someone start it up while you watch it and you my see a violent action when your engine initially begins to run does your truck vibrate roughly when cold if it does you need to garage it when you can it ll help keep temp up on if it does start with a big shake replace spark plugs and also get stronger bolts that'll help hold it together

Try checking your axles it could be what your driving is causing brackets to flex make sure axles are performing correctly

LOUD squeak coming from serpentine belt?

We changed the alternator and had to loosen the belt (1).When we replaced everything and tightened the belt it became very loud. Like power steering pump squeak. Hard to tell where it is coming from. The squeak wasn't there before. Is belt too tight or too loose? (95 Jeep Cherokee SE 4.0)
LOUD squeak coming from serpentine belt?
Your belt may be loose, or you may have a bed bering in one of your pulley's. I would start by getting the belt tightened. If that does not work you can easily find out where the noise is coming from......

1. Take a long screwdriver and CAREFULLY place it on everything that has a pulley. (Alternator, tensioner, etc.)

2. Place your ear on the end of the screwdriver. The screwdriver will magnify any noise that is going on inside that may be causing the problem.

You can also buy belt compound that will %26quot;moisten%26quot; your belt. Some really old school guys use a bar of soap on the belt to lubricate it. I would not reccoment that though. Very dangerous.

Hope you get it fixed....
LOUD squeak coming from serpentine belt?
Do that with a screwdriver and you could get it shoved in your head.

Squealing belt = loose belt

or

= pulley not turning for whatever reason
On v-belt in the past I touched a bar of soap to the edges and they stopped squealing. I would try tighitening the belt first.

    I have a 93 saturn sL1 i need to no what a part is?
Don't know exactly which part you're talking about, but the other members seemed to be on the right track. (John Paul and HobbaBob) I'm guessing the same. You probably need to replace the Top Engine Mount (also called the Top Torque-Axis Mount). It is held by three bolts (to the engine), and two bolts to the frame, and has hard vulcanized rubber in the middle, right?

If so...That's the part you'll need. (Upper Engine Mount, Saturn Part #21012185)

Next time you want to change the belt, you don't have to remove the engine mount (as you'll need to hold up your engine with a jack (usually on the oil pan) to take the engine mount on and off). You technically need to loosen and re-tighten the lower mount after you've removed the upper mount.

The best way is actually to take off the passenger side front wheel, and remove the plastic splash guard panel. From there you will have clear access to the tensioner. You can just slip a socket on the tensioner, turn clockwise to loosen the tensioner... and the belt will slide right off. You can replace the belt with the same technique. One thing to note though... if you replaced the belt because it was %26quot;squealing%26quot;, you probably should have replaced the tensioner along with it.

I'll find some links for you to review.

Go to an auto parts store and ask them what it is, the guys behind the counter there are your best bet for a quick identification.
Sounds to me a trip to Saturn is in order! Not the planet the car dealer! You probably removed the engine mount to get the serpentine belt tensioner turned to remove the belt. So is that what you found broken? Rubber part torn? %26quot;Motor Mount%26quot; You could take a picture of it and send it to me?
while you don't actualy have to remove the right side top mount [bolted to the engine and to the body] to change the serpintine belt it is probably easier for a homeowner to do so, and this is probably the part in question [metal brackets and rubber] ? a clear discription of the actual part would be more helpful
I couldn't find the diagram online but I did find a place that will answer questions for you. I posted the address below. If I find something else, I will repost.

How do you change the power steering belt on a l993 grand am with an overhead cam?

Shoot i been a while since i have done one but if i remeber right you have to loosen the bolts on the pump to make it slide so you can take the belt off.

You don't change it with an overhead cam. You change it with a wrench.

04 Chrysler Town & Country - What does my serpentine belt squeak?

My serp belt was %26quot;chirping%26quot; sounded like a cricket living under the hood. I changed the belt, but the noise still occurred. I changed the Tensioner.. still the same.. I changed the Idler Pulley.. Results are the same.. Would a bad water pump or power steering pump pully cause this noise? I did not add any dressing to the belt.. I hear that is actually not recommended. Any thoughts?
04 Chrysler Town %26amp; Country - What does my serpentine belt squeak?
How many miles on the water pump?

Alternator is possible, P/S unlikely, A/C very possible

Take belt off and check them. looking for play or drag when spun by hand. Noise too, so turn down the radio in the garage.

Me I have a belt stethoscope to check where the noises come from. Real figgin handy and cheap from harbor frieght(way less than that tensioner you bought!)

04 Chrysler Town %26amp; Country - What does my serpentine belt squeak?
I replaced an alternator for this noise once and it fixed it. The customer was scared it was going to go out and he would have a dead battery. What reminded me of this was that when it came in the customer had replaced the belt prior thinking it was a belt noise.

Car dealership service vs. independent car shop?

I have a 2001 Saturn SL2. I need to have my radiator hoses and serpentine belt changed. The dealership quoted me $360, and my mom's usual car shop (she also has a Saturn) quoted me $240. Where should I go??? Should it be a concern that the car shop doesn't specialize in Saturns specifically?
Car dealership service vs. independent car shop?
In my opinion, dealer service is unnecessary unless it is a warranty issue and the cost will be covered. As a do-it-yourself person, I do not go to shops unless I have to for inspections or tires, etc. $240 seems a bit high for just hoses and belts. But, the bottom line is trust. If you trust in the mechanic's skills and business ethics, then by all means go to that mechanic. Otherwise, it never hurts to shop around, and sometimes word of mouth gets you the best recommendation. If the repairs are not crucial right now, see what some other shops in town are charging for the same services. And don't be afraid to ask the mechanic questions beforehand, letting you know exactly what is going to be done to your vehicle and why. Shops are like restaurants - if they won't let you see their kitchen, don't eat what they're cookin', get what I mean? Good luck!!
Car dealership service vs. independent car shop?
Just ask the mom's shop that does they forseee any other expenses. Many a time, they hide it during initial quotations. Also, get copnfirmation why they are charging less. Are they planning to repair with an old or second grade parts.

Still if it is trusted one since long time, you can go for it.
Simple stuff like that is ok to have done at your moms shop. They probably have a lower hourly rate than the dealer. If you had some other type of repairs need say engine work or an electrical grimlin then take to someone that knows that modle of car.
Do you trust your mother? Has this independent shop mistreated you mother? Would you like to save $120? I could quote studies that have been done on independent's vs dealer's but for the quick answer, go to a good independent repair facility with ASE certified technicians and feel comfortable. ASE is a stringent, voluntary testing that an auto repairman puts himself through to prove he is at the top of his field every 4 years. There's bad doctors and lawyers and garbage collectors. Trust your family!
if i was you go to the independent car shop

you just pay more for the name of the dealership
well i am really torn here. Because I do not like dealerships but at the same time price is not always a good thing to go by. The old saying you get what you pay for. I would take it to one more place and get an estimate. If they are closer to mom's shop then go to mom's shop. If they are closer to the dealer maybe mom's shop is not the best place to go.

HUGE car repairs needed. what'll it cost?

for my 1997 chevy lumina, I was told i needed:

    fuel line cleaned

    transmission fluid changed

    serpentine belt replacement

    head light bulb replacement

    right front ball joint replaced

    front brake lines replaced

    and a tire rotation

does anyone know how much all this shud cost? if not can u tell me how much at least some of it will cost? which stuff is most urgent and shud be done first?
HUGE car repairs needed. what'll it cost?
None of that is HUGE. Most is probably not necessary.

Fuel lines have gasoline running through them at all times. That will keep them clean.

On a '97, if regular transmission fluid changes have not been done it is best to leave it alone.

Serpentine belt will cost around 30 bucks, 25 or so to install.

Headlight bulb is around 10 bucks, add 10 more to put it in.

Ball joint, brake lines (flex hoses) and rotation would cost around 200 bucks in my shop.

So 275 or less should do it.

Ball joint, brake hoses, and headlight are a safety issues, the rest can wait (or isn't even needed).
HUGE car repairs needed. what'll it cost?
wel first if you was told you needed it shoul dhave been told how much it cost was or ask

fuel lines can clean somewhat with a bottle of fuel treatment once a couple months about 5 bucks

unlikey need anything with a transmission mine has over 300,000 miles never been touch

should replace belts and or hose about every three yrs price vary can call three shops get about price

head light anyone can replace at home just cal a parts store ask how much

ball joint about 50 bucks and up to buy 100 or some to install if you dont know how to do it

tires shoul dbe rotated at every oil change about every 3000 to 5000 miles

    20 bucks maybe

brake lines hardly ever go bad should last 20 yrs

but price vary can call three local shops to get most of your answers id guess and say for all that well over a 1000 bucks

right front ball joint replaced breaks cant steer you crash

front brake lines replaced cant stop you crash

head light bulb replacement might get a ticket

serpentine belt replacement no belt no power cant steer or stop well lose power to battery car over heats

a tire rotation just saves the life of tires can wait really if your goung to have to fix frontend you might need tires

and last would be a transmison fluid change which is not really something that has to be done at all should be fine for over 100,000 miles if you drive it right

    transmission fluid changed
    that's not huge...that's standard maintenance.........

change the fuel filter and dont worry about the line.....part is under $20 and u can do it in under and hour usrelf....

transfluid will cost u about $70 at a shop or u can do it for 40

belt will cost u about 25 for part and can b changed in 20 min....

bulbs cost about 10 each and can b changed in under 10 min......(dont touch the bulb itself)

ball joint part around 50 and shop will cahrge u another 50 -100 to put on....

brake hoses are 20 each and actual lines are 15 bucks but u will need a shop to put them on if u dont no wat ur doing and will cost 500 or so if actual lines are bad.....

tire rotation is 20 bucks at walmart.....rotate and balance (which i wud suggest) is only 30

so get these MINOR problems fixed and move on.........all this stuff is normal maintenance issues that wudn't need to b done all at once if u did proper maintenance on ur car.....
Fuel line cleaned? Never heard of that...they are metal lines and rubber hoses...what is there to clean?

As long as they are not leaking, they're good...

As for the parts and labour, ask the shop/mechanic that told you that you need this stuff done. They can draw up a quote for you in writing. If you want a second opinion, take that list to another shop.

    What should be done first?

Brake lines, serpentine belt replaced, ball joint replaced.
    belt replaced

    ball joint

    brake lines

    and a second opinion
pushin' 6 - $700. almost all labor. take it somewhere else to get looked at and I bet that list gets cut in half.

  • Belt Squeaking on Startup - year old belts, new alternator...what could...?

The serpentine belts were replaced myself recently in January 2008, and changed the alternator in August 2008. Squeaking started only after I changed the alternator and placed the belts back on. I've tried tightening and loosening the belts and it doesn't seem to solve the problem. I notice sometimes that if the belts squeal for a bit and I (a) gun the engine or (b)turn the wheel fast, the noise will go away.

What's everyone got for a guess? Stiff bearing on one of the pumps? Bad Alternator? Belts still to new?
Belt Squeaking on Startup - year old belts, new alternator...what could...?
The alternator draws the most load when the vehicle first starts due to a lower state of charge when cold (the regulator is looking for some where around 13v).

You probably have build up in one or more of the pulleys, I have seen one instance where the pulley was worn out and would not cradle the belt properly.
Belt Squeaking on Startup - year old belts, new alternator...what could...?
Even some serp belts need to be TIGHT to not squeal on cold startup.

    90's Jeep 4.0's for ex.

You should only be able to deflect the belt 1/2%26quot; or so if you push on it with 5 lb's or so of force.

If it's flopping around when the engine is at idle it's tooooooooooo loose
As a mechanic of 30 years I'd say that Don K is right on.
I'd take a spray bottle full of water and selectively spray portions of each belt one at a time. Then see if the squeaking immediately stops for a certain belt. If all the squeaking ends up coming from just the serpentine belt (when you spritz it with water, the squeak abruptly stops), then remove that belt again and carefully look at the ribbed side to see if any small shiny foreign objects are embedded in the ribbs. Clean the belt and also clean all the pulleys well. Then make sure the belt tensioner is properly tensioning the belt. Once you get the pulleys clean, you can always try a brand new belt and keep the old belt for emergencies. The water spritz test removes any uncertainty about whether it's a belt or bearing noise etc.
there could be a bearing going bad but i would rather think that the belt tensioner has gotten tired or just needs to be replaced
The alternator isn't tight enough. After the car is running for a half hour or so try touching the pulley on the alternator. Be careful, you might lose your fingerprints. If it's hot, then it needs tightening.
As a mechanic for many years I can tell you that %26quot;most%26quot; belts do not squeal at high speeds. Some will stop squealing after the warm up. Now to answer your question. The new alternator came with a new drive pulley on it.? What happened, is the new belt that you put on in Jan. wore down to fit the old drive pulley. If the groves on your old alternator drive pulley was even slightly wore, then the old belt will costume fit it to the old pulley. Now that there is a new pulley that has no wear on it, the old belt does not fit into the new groves. They are actually smaller, and therfore the groves on the new belt do not fit. I hope I am explaining this well enough for you to under stand what I'm trying to say. Change the belt and the squealing should go away. Good luck.

2000 Ford Taurus - Groaning Noise When Turning Left?

I Have a 2000 Ford Taurus. For awhile now I've been hearing this awful groaning noise whenever I turn the steering wheel left. The sound kind of reminds me of a donkey.

I tried changing the serpentine belt because it had signs of wear. I also changed the power steering pump and put new fluid in. None of this has helped.

    So what can it be?
2000 Ford Taurus - Groaning Noise When Turning Left?
yes, the rack and pionon gear assembly,,which turns the car, and the power steering unit feeds, has a valve in it that gets dirty and clogged. i had a 94 cougar that stuck when i turned it left, and it was this valve try that first.
2000 Ford Taurus - Groaning Noise When Turning Left?
You may be your own worst enemy here! THese cars do NOT use POWER STEERING FLUID in them. They use either Dexron or Mercon transmission fluid in the power steering system!!! There are so many Ford cars out there that have gone to the local jiffy lube, and the attendant has put in the WRONG fluid, causing groans and noisy, faulty power steering pumps. YOU might have been a victim of this, too! For goodness sake, READ YOUR MANUAL about the proper fluids to use in this car before you do some MORE damage!! The Taurus is one of the best American made cars.
Did you properly bleed the powersteering unit of %26quot;air%26quot; ? This would be why.If you don't, you will ruin the new one in no time. Does the manual specify %26quot;F%26quot; fluid only?

if yes, do not use tranny fluid, look for %26quot;F%26quot; type fluid only
Since in one direction maybe defective rack%26amp;pinion unit
could be a ball bearing or joint

    1996 jeep cherokee?

I changed serpentine belt however when i first changed it and ran my air conditioner there was no noise now after about 3 weeks i am getting a loud whining noise. I tried belt conditioner and that was working but now if the car sits and i try the air conditioner the noise comes back. Please advise
    1996 jeep cherokee?
Well since I don't know where the noise is coming from I can't say for sure. But if it's actually the belt squealing the you need to change the tensioner pulley. It could be the air conditioner clutch making a noise. You can usually change that without changing the entire pump.

I have a couple questions about a 94 chevy caprice?

how difficult is it to change out a serpentine belt in a 94 caprice, also how much does a ac compressor run for one of these cars.
I have a couple questions about a 94 chevy caprice?
You don't even need a friend to help change it, take a sharp knife to the old one, and it comes off EASY.

There is a specialty tool for belt tensioners, but I have never used one.

All I use is a ratchet if I can get it on or a box end wrench and a pipe for leverage if needed.

Your first responder is correct in that it will take a professional shop to do the repair. You may be able to get a deal from where ever you buy the compressor.

    Good luck
I have a couple questions about a 94 chevy caprice?
The serpentine belt is easy. All it takes is a ratchet handle and a friend. You relieve the tension and he slides the old belt off and slides the new one on. The A/C compressor will run you about $250 for the part, but it will take a pro with specialty tools to install it, vacuum the system, and recharge it. Total cost might be as high as $500. Good luck.
13mm socket on a decent 3/8%26quot; drive rachet is all you need to change serpentine belt.

as far as AC, a compressor usually will run $250 plus depending on where you get it from. IT's recommended to buy new orifice tube and drier. As long as the AC comp is the only thing at fault (IE no holes in evaporator or condenser), you can buy manifold gauges, and a vacuum pump at Harbor freight for under $100. Get the right comp oil, and the right amount of 134a. Get a haynes manual, and with a little ability you can probably change out the compressor yourself. Plently of directions on how to pull down the system and charge it yourself.

Low end price to change intake manifold gasket, transmission pan gasket, valve cover gasket, serpentine belt.....?

And clean EGR valve. Parts%26amp;labor. Thank you.
Low end price to change intake manifold gasket, transmission pan gasket, valve cover gasket, serpentine belt.....?
Intake manifold gasket set $55.00 labour 2.5 hrs, Transmission gasket and filter $42.00 labour 1 hr, Valve cover gaskets $16.00 labour 1 hr, Serpentine belt $38.00 1/2 hr labour. With changing the intake manifold gasket I would strongly recommend a oil and filter change be done at the same time. Oil and filter $18.00 labour 1/4 hr. I come up with 5 1/4 hours labour now its up to the rate that the mechanic charges for his services. My rate is $80.00 per hour and this would be $420.00 labour and parts $169.00 plus taxes. Hope this helps.

parts and labor around $700 but your best bet is to go to your local firestone or big o tire shop and get a quote

  • My 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 makes a constant high pitched squeal while driving. Any ideas?

This is a loud sound that can be heard inside and outside the car. It only makes the sound when the tachometer reads between 1800 and 2200 RPM. It does not make the sound at all when the car is not moving, ie 2k RPM in park or neutral. The car has about 79k miles and the serpentine belt was changed at 50k.
My 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 makes a constant high pitched squeal while driving. Any ideas?
if you have had recent alternator, or anything attached to the belts replaced recently take it back, they incorrectly tightened the belt.
My 2001 Ford Focus ZX3 makes a constant high pitched squeal while driving. Any ideas?
It's probobly the fan, have it checked out buy your local ford dealer.
    I had a 2001 Focus SE, had the same problem. Here is what they are going to tell you when you go to a Ford Dealership. %26quot;We're going to have to replace the intake clamp, rotate your tires and rotors, change your brakes, and realign your wheels. We also may have to replace some 'durtee durtee durr' sensors and 'durtee durtee durr' your cars computer..%26quot;

The 2001's all sucked, I got rid of mine, and got an Escape. When they resold my Focus, guess what, the same thing to that guy.
sometimes that noise it's making can be caused by the tensioners or the water pump itself what i reccomend is to

take the belt off and inspect for wear if the tensioner is the one making the noise it will be worn possibly will also have rust looking material around bearing.
belt must be centered on pulleys, wrong belt, bad tensioner
I have seen a miss placed plastic splash shield cause it. Rubs against the crank pully. As well as the tensioner pully.

I have also seen backing plate on the front brakes rubbing the rotor cause it.
In addition to checking the pulleys, the PVC elbow (the 90 degree piece of rubber on top of the PVC valve) had a tendency to deteriorate due to age and heat. When they develop a small hole, it acts like a reed valve, emitting a high pitched squeal at certain vacuum levels. 1991 ford explorer making noise?

I have a 1991 ford explorer it is making a a noise it sounds like crickets. I have changed the serpentine belt, the two pullies, alternator, and finally the water pump. I removed the serpentine belt and started the morter and there was no noise so it's not the engine. Please let me know if you can help.
    1991 ford explorer making noise?
Well without actually looking at it you probably have some bad ball joints. Possibly its your radiator fan clutch is bad. That will make some noise. That also could be the brakes. Im just curious at how you started the car without the serpentine belt. I've never been able to do that. You could have your brakes checked, and you could have the Fan Clutch changed out. But see if the bearings somewhere need to be replaced.

Squeaky Serpentine Belt on 2000 Ford Taurus or something else..??

every since I got my sepentine belt changed it has squeaked ! I took it back to Jiffy Lube, and they put some kind of belt dressing on. it worked for a while and stopped squeaking until I turned my car off and started it back up, now it is sqeaking louder !

they say it may be a pulley, or the alternator bearings going out...but if this was true would the noise stop sometimes, and come and go, or would it be non-stop ? I noticed that the noise goes at way sometimes at idle, but is always there at start up...sometimes it squeaks all day !

    what could it be..??
Squeaky Serpentine Belt on 2000 Ford Taurus or something else..??
sounds like to me that if you have the right serpentine belt on that your belt tensioner pulley could be giving out. don't buy the alternator bearing story. what i have done on occasion is to move the tensioner pulley back and forth for awhile to make sure it is moving freely. you could buy some %26quot;belt dressing%26quot; and spray it on the underside of the belt for a quick fix. if it keeps sqeeking you might need a new belt tensioner pulley.
Squeaky Serpentine Belt on 2000 Ford Taurus or something else..??
sounds like a loose alternator belt, have someone tighten it.
    water pump going-OUT.
It could be the belt dressing they put on causing the belt to slip. It could also be the cam synchronizer, water pump, idler pulley, tensioner pulley.
Second answer is a good answer - what you might also check is to turn on your defroster - then turn it off - and see if that makes any difference. if it does it could be your a/c compressor - The clutch plate could be wore and/or your compressor may be going out. The air conditioning system works in the winter time any time the defrost is used to keep the oil circulating in the system. hope this helps. good luck

What makes a chirping sound on my '01 Ford Mustang?

I have changed the pulley barron, serpentine belt, the tension pulley, and the water pump. Was told the alternator was good. What next?
What makes a chirping sound on my '01 Ford Mustang?
If it is the 3.8L V-6, check the synchronizer. The cam sensor is mounted to the top of it, and the synchronizers on those are bad about the bushing failing. It sounds exactly like a bad belt or pulley. You can actually push the synchro very slightly with a screwdriver, and one way will make it louder, the other way stops the chirp. Then you know for sure that's the cause.

If it is a V-8, then just keep hunting at the accessory drive.
What makes a chirping sound on my '01 Ford Mustang?
DID YOU CHECK THE IDLER PULLEY ALSO?
i don't know exactly what chirping but mine made a really high pitched chirp. i thought it was coming from behind the steering wheel but a lot of trial led me to find if i smack the part of the roof between the visors and above the rear view mirror hard enough the chirping stops. don't know why and it might not be the same thing but try it. haha
you have a bird trapped and he chirps when the engine starts...lol Does it go away when the engine warms up?

Is the belt tight? Spray some belt dressing or wd40 on it engine off...close hood and start so stuff does not fly on your paint...and see if that helps.

Question about Saturn L300 Electrical Problem?

While driving the car, engine cut-off. When the engine stopped, the oil light and battery light went on. I pulled off the road, then was able to re-start it on first try.

Next morning, took short trip and the car did not start on first try (started on second try). The car cranks over well, just didn't start. So I was thinking good battery. Bad alternator or loose belts? I had taken it to a dealer for an oil change a couple of weeks ago and they commented that I needed to think about changing the serpentine belt b/c it had some wear. I am now wondering if they loosened the belt tension when checking? Ideas?
Question about Saturn L300 Electrical Problem?
    %26quot;The car cranks over well, just didn't start. So I was thinking good battery. Bad alternator or loose belts?%26quot;

Why did you think that based on what you said? The alternator doesn't help your car start other than it charges the battery, which helps your car start. So it can be the battery, too.

I'd change the belt if it needs it, but it's unlikely that a bad belt would cause the alternator to not run as well, especially if you're not hearing other noises to indicate the belt is slipping.

Get the battery and alternator checked and go from there. It's usually done in the same test.

  • Car talk:scrapping noise after belt change?

i took the car to the shop for just a regular oil change+ rotation, dude walks up, sounding grave (note the place was empty...u know, bad economy), said my belts were bad and needed to be changed.. i got serpentine...(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serpentine_鈥?/a> so they did change, right... so i drive off, get on free way and lo and bhold, at %26gt;60mps my freaking steering starts vibrating.. i got new tires %26lt;4months, and they got balancing already... then after i stopped, car becomes cold, starting off or making bends i got this loud screeching shrill noise from car. any ideas what they did wrong that could have caused it?
Car talk:scrapping noise after belt change?
Bad idler pulley for serpentine belt. Tires need to be re-balanced.

Car talk:scrapping noise after belt change?
that definitely sounds like your power steering pump is acting up. Changing the belt shouldn't have anything to do with it unless it is too loose. Try going out to your car, start the car and leave it in park now turn your wheel all the way to the lock. If you hear a screeching noise then that's what it is. Now you may just need to bleed to system which is done by turning the wheel from lock to lock to lock to lock and so on until the screeching stops. If it doesn't, go back to that shop.

    Serpentine belt and Drive Belt?

I got my oil changed today at the Nissan dealership. They told me that my drive belts need to be replaced (they have cracks in them).

My last oil change (before this one) was at car spa, on the check sheet, it said my serpentine belt was OK. This was back in December 2009.

I find it odd that after only about 4 months the belts now have cracks in them and need to be replaced immediately.

This is of course serpentine belt and drive belts are two different things. So are they the same thing? What is the difference?

    I drive a 05 Nissan Sentra.
    Serpentine belt and Drive Belt?
serpentine belt runs all your accessories like power steering, alternator, water pump and air conditioner, the drive belt is the timing belt and that cannot be seen from outside the engine and there is no way physically possible for a mechanic to see that belt to say it needs replaced without tearing the front of the engine apart, apparently he is going by the mileage on your vehicle and the factory recommended change interval.
    Serpentine belt and Drive Belt?
On a 4 cylinder engine there is usually only 1 serpentine belt and it's the drive belt (might be different on a sentra). If you live in a place with variable temperature it's likely that a belt would need to be replaced after 5 years. Actually in this case I would trust the dealership more than an independent provider.
Whoever called them drive belts, do not go back to them. They have drive belts on some motorcycles but there isn't any car that I know of that has a drive belt. If you have a serpentine belt, it runs everything but the cam shaft.

One more thing. An oil change at a dealership. When you went in for that they knew you didn't know much about cars and that's why they said you need a belt. Never go to the dealership for an oil change, you'll get charged twice as much and they'll try to get you for something else.
Most cars have 1 belt but some have 2. Some have 1 that goes from crank pulling to the water pump. And another one that drives all the accessories.
Take a few close-up picture of the belt and post another question. If you see cracks, take pictures of those specifically.

Then you'll get a yahoo answer on if the dealership was trying to do unnecessary maintenance.

For the question you asked here, I I think they mean the same thing in Serpentine and Drive belt.
not all cars have serpentine belts. But given the year I would say yes on serpentine! A serpentine belt Is one belt that runs A/C, Crank, Water pump, Alternator,And on most cars the power steering if the car has more than one belt then you have drive belts and some cars are driven by chain on the power steering that is why some of them are NOT on the serp belt! Hope this helps

PLEASE HELP!!! My car is squealing after I replaced my serpentine belt. Did my mechanic break something?

I went in for an oil change and the workers said I needed a new serpentine belt. They replaced it, but now my car is squealing. My car has never made this sound before! They said it was common and I needed a new tensioner (?). Did they break it or is this common to happen after getting the belt replaced? Thanks so much!!!
PLEASE HELP!!! My car is squealing after I replaced my serpentine belt. Did my mechanic break something?
They probably had an oil transfer from their oily hands to the belt. It's a common problem with dirty, sloppy mechanics. Take it back and tell them to clean all of the pulleys of oil and repalce the belt. It is not the tensioner and it is not common if the mechanic is relatively clean. They don't want to admit that they were sloppy but they'll sure sell you a tensioner to make more money from you. You may even be able to buy a spray cleaner specifically made for this type of problem.
PLEASE HELP!!! My car is squealing after I replaced my serpentine belt. Did my mechanic break something?
Probably just needs to be adjusted.
They broke somthin, squealing like that is really uncommon. (Some questions) Did it start squealing after the change, if so... Yea, they broke somthing, Most of the time they wont admit a mistake Consult another mechacian and tell him your problem
it may be because its cold. some cars have adjustable idler pulleys. you can try to adjust it a little to take up the slack.
Dan B is correct. Mechanics are notorious for trying to pull a fast one on the unsuspecting customer. They either broke something or put the wrong belt on. If it wasn't squealing until after they touched it, it's their fault.
maybe oil got in to the belt when they changed it..

buy a belt dressing, it sometimes helps.

get it at autozone or some local auto part store you got there

I have a 2000 ford mustang V6 coupe. when ever i turn the car on it starts screeching reallu bad? why?
I would check all belts and make sure that all pulleys turn and have no side to side play. Thanks
I have a 2000 ford mustang V6 coupe. when ever i turn the car on it starts screeching reallu bad? why?
better check the rest of the belts.....
there are more belts than just the serpentine.
Your belts may be loose. Either you need to manually tighten them (as i do in my car) or your tension spring is weak. I would check these two and see if that fixes the problem. I do not suggest the sprays that they say stop the squealing of belts, they do not work well at all.
Probably one of the tensioner or idler pulleys has worn bearings that act up most when the engine is cold. It is always a good idea to replace the pulleys when you replace the serpentine belt. Another possibility is that your water pump bearings are starting to go bad. Check for water leaks under your car. Good Luck!

  • I got my multi V-Groove belt A/C & Alt changed today is that the serpentine belt?

a serpentine belt is a belt that goes around all of your pullies on your vehicle. If this belt does that then yes it is. A Serpentine belt is called just that because like a snake it wraps around everything.

I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?

I just had the serpentine and the alternator drive belts changed, but is there a separate timing belt on my van? If so, how expensive if it to get it changed? I was quoted $450 or so, so they must have to take a lot of the engine apart.
I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
Chrysler's service manuals recommend 90,000 miles at the earliest. I would say 75K to 80K is appropriate.

Basically, we have to remove the belts, pulleys, motor mount, lay the PS Pump and AC Compressor aside and remove the bracket and remove the front covers. It is also a good idea to inspect or replace the water pump while in there.

$450 seems to be about average.

I'm assuming you have the 3.0L since you mention timing belt (3.3L and 3.8L have a timing chain, not a belt) and they are prone to oil leaks at the cam seals. It is a good time to do them as well, if they are leaking.
I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager. How often does the timing belt need to be changed?
should be replaced every 50,000 but most people go to 75;000

450 is about right they have to tear down the front of the engine
the timing belt needs to be replaced 75,000.quotes vary from 450.00 to as much 8 or 9.00 make the tech.gauranity price and labor. good luck
Look in your owners manual if you have one.

Mot vehicles recommend to replace it at every 75k to 100k miles, or 10 years, whichever is first. Chrysler manuals usually recommend having it done at 90k miles, with no mention of age. However, I would change it if it gets to 10 years old and has not reached the recommended miles yet just for safety sake.

50,000 miles is too early in most instances to replace the timing belt. At that rate, you'd have replaced it twice in the recommended replacement interval. I replaced mine at 100k miles (and about 6 years old) and it still looked great, which is how you want it, you don't want it all worn out and cracked when it's replaced.

$450 is about right for a timing belt on a voyager, only reason it should go higher is if they find something else needs to be replaced while they're in there. In that case, they should always ask before adding anything to the repair order.
About 75,000 miles is good on those engines. However, if your at that mileage, spend a little extra, and replace the water pump, and timing belt tensioner at the same time. The timing belt drives the water pump, and if you've got that sort of mileage on the van, the pump is reaching the end of it's service life. Much better to take care of it, since you'll be right there anyway. It will cost you less in the long run.

    Ml350 Serpentine belt?

Hello, does anyone know if it easy or have some instructions on how to change the ML 350 Serpentine belt?

    Thanks
    Ml350 Serpentine belt?
I would take it to a dealer, but I suppose I only say that because I am a tech and that is how we make money. If you insist on doing it yourself I would take a mental picture of how the belt is routed and then all you will need is a 3/8%26quot; drive ratchet and a 17mm socket to release the tensioner. The tensioner is on the right side of the crank pulley and the 17mm hex head is underneath the belt. It's really easy, but I have changed a million of them so I would say you shouldn't have to much trouble with it.
    Ml350 Serpentine belt?
Easy, as long as the diagram is still under your hood. There should be a sticker near the radiator showing the routing of the belt. You insert a ratchet wrench, usually 3/8%26quot; drive in a hole in the front of the tensioner pulley and relieve tension on the belt. Take off the old one and put on the new one. Release the wrench and the tensioner should resume it's job. That is, if this car is like all the others with a serpentine belt.

How much would a dealership charge to change a fan belt on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?

It's a 95, v8, serpentine belt. I did it myself in about 5 minutes. The cost of the belt was a little under $30 from Autozone. I wonder how much a dealership would charge for something that took me (moderately experienced) 5 minutes to change.

Audi A4 2002 1.8 quattro turbo has timing belt or serpentine Belt ?? or both?
you have both I have a 98.5 A4 and be warned if your timing belt breaks it will cost about 3k to fix because of bent valves and so much damage occurs to this engine. Audi extended the warranty on this so I would go to an Audi dealer and find out about that and get it fixed ASAP. Its not an easy job however as they have to remove the front bumper.
Audi A4 2002 1.8 quattro turbo has timing belt or serpentine Belt ?? or both?
Both. you need to have the timing belt and timing belt tesioners/harwear changed every 60K miles or so. the serpintine belt can be replaced when you see wear on it. you must change the timing belt on these car it will cost you if you dont.
it has both one you can see with the hood up the other you have to do some disassembly to see the timing belt turns the cams the serpentine belt turns the accessories i.e. alternator, power steering pump

Ford Taurus Squeak under the hood, how can I fix it?

My 2003 Taurus SE 3.0L OHV keeps making a squeaking sound under the hood(increases and decreases with RPMS), I just changed the serpentine belt and idler pulleys, so that's not the problem, any suggestions?
Ford Taurus Squeak under the hood, how can I fix it?
If what you are hearing is a loud chirping noise at idle which becomes a whine at higher RPMs it is the bearing in the camshaft synchronizer going bad, a common problem on the Ford 3.0L V6 Vulcan engines. That bearing is not well lubricated on those engines and the chirping is usually intermittent and comes and goes in the early stages of wear.

The camshaft synchronizer is mounted in place of the distributor and it is gear driven by the camshaft and drives the oil pump just like a distributor does, and the cam position sensor is mounted on top of the camshaft synchronizer where the distributor housing and cap would be on a distributor. It looks like this (the cap with the arrow is the synchronizer positioning tool which is used for installation):

    http://info.rockauto.com/getimage/getima鈥?/a>

It is located on the engine block (driver side) buried beneath the wiring harnesses above where the engine is bolted to the transmission. To replace it, before removal, you must set number 1 piston to 0 degrees TDC of the compression stroke and then note and mark the position of the cam sensor electrical connector. The electrical connector must be located in the exact same position after installing the replacement camshaft synchronizer or the fuel injection system will be badly out of time with the engine. That is where the camshaft synchronizer positioning tool with the arrow on it is used during installation. Pointing it parallel to the center line of crankshaft toward the front of the crankshaft while number 1 piston is set to 0 degrees TDC of the compression stroke will put the cam sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position.

I don't recommend you attempt replacement yourself unless you are confident you can do it properly because you can really throw the fuel injection timing badly out of whack and still wind up having to pay the same labor charge to correct it as you would have had to pay to have it replaced. The labor charge will be about 2 hours, although with common short cuts most skilled mechanics can do it in less than an hour. The part cost about $50 if you buy it yourself at a discount parts store but rather than listing it as a camshaft synchronizer some parts catalogs might list it as a distributor or crank angle sensor.
Ford Taurus Squeak under the hood, how can I fix it?
Kenny, good answer. The mechanic was nice enough to save me the old sync. and there were metal shavings all over it. Got the car with 21k miles now has 65k, I have spent over 6k in repairs. I think I got a lemon.

Sell it and buy a halfway decent car.
jack up the radio and put a real car around it
a squeak under the hood could be anything. could be the alternator, water pump, a/c compressor, power steering. did you make sure to tighten the belts if their not tight enough their squeak make sure you cant move the belts with your fingers (engine off of course)
these cars have a cam synchronizer, and a cam sensor that like to squeek. have replaced dozens. its on the left side of the engine right at the end of the lower intake. looks like a distributor without the top.
try spraying belt dressing on belts and pulleys with engine running to see if it quiets down any.spray on all pulleys. you might find one that is bad. p.s. buy a real car. a ford taurus....come on get real. buy a corvette or if you have to have a ford a mustang gt.
maybe the hood itself is squeaking.

Why am I getting poor service at Pep Boys?

Okay, here's the deal. I dropped my car off last night at pep boys so it would be worked on in the morning to get my serpentine belt changed because it was wore, my car was squealing. It now almost six o' clock the next day and they aren't even done with it. i have called four times already. I thought it would be done by 4 since i had work, so i missed work. I am paying at least $300 altogether. I'm seriously pissed.
Why am I getting poor service at Pep Boys?
I would be upset too if I was paying $300 to have a $29.95 belt replaced.

Unfortunately you did not tell us what kind of car/truck, what engine it has in it and how old it is, so we can not give any specific answer.

Any repair shop has several vehicles to work on in a day. Some are fixed before others because of scheduling and amount of work needed , with small jobs being used as fill in work ( somehting to do between big jobs ) They apparently are running behind .
Why am I getting poor service at Pep Boys?
Come on, it's Pep Boys man. Doesn't your town have a real mechanical shop?

The fact that it is a Jetta could have something to do with it though. Though many people consider them great cars the fact remains that their parts can be reasonably expensive and difficult to find, not to mention hard to change.

Tell them to shove it and take your car to someone with more sense. Don't be afraid to tell them that it is a load of crap, it is your car after all?
Pep Boys totally suck...i have used them 3 times..NEVER again...every time i took my van in for a repair...poop boys ALWAYS found something else wrong with the van and fixed it...WITHOUT calling me first...they seem to always find something else wrong..i knew a guy that went in and got 4 new tires...they put them on ok...except 3 tires the white walls wer out and one tire the white wall was in...he took the car back the next day..and they told him it would be awhile because they were busy...5 hrs later they got to his car..
I wouldn't let Pepboys empty my ashtray.

Why would you pay $300 for a 10 minute job with a $50 belt?

What i found out was that my fuse box was not bolted down enough and that both battery termonals were not tightend enough. they felt tight but i still had power loss and then no power. there are 2 bolts on each term. one 1/2 ince and one 5/8. (5/8 I believe, 1/2 for sure for one) tighten all the terms and then follow the pos cable to the fuse box. clean the connection there and then tighten the cable to the fuse box.

Also check your ground wire. there should be a braided type cord that goes from engine to firewall. undo the bolts and clean the connections. make sure that the firewall connection is clean and a little metal showing. then conect the cord and tighten.

also you could have gotten a bad (new) alternator. new ones are often remanufactured and not the best. (I went through 2 in a grand am because of that)

If you still experience problems keeping power it seams like you have a bad ground somewhere else in the car and you would need a mechanic to look and fix. (unless your a mechanic with a lot of time. -wireharness have so many wires and go into somany hard to reach places)

After that I do not know unless I would have a look at it.

I own a 95 3.8L bored to a 4.0L and ran into them similar problems.

Hope I could be of any help!
I own a 1994 Ford Mustang V-6. I have changed the battery and alternator and I am still loosing power. Help?
it sounds like a ground problem to me
you may have to trace all the wires around the car you may have a short that is drawing power

    Serpentine belt squealing on Jeep?

The belt squeals real loud on my Jeep. I have already changed the belt and adjusted it several times. I have narrowed it down. When I turn off the A/C it stops squealing. At this point I assume it is the pulley. Can I buy the pulley at a parts store like Autozone and change it or do I have to replace the whole compressor?
    Serpentine belt squealing on Jeep?
You can change the pulley, it comes off as part of the clutch assembly. Autozone can lend you the tool to pull of the clutch.

If it still squeals after you change it you may need to change that compressor, if it's getting ready to seize up it would put more drag than normal on the belt causing it to squeal. In fact this is most likely your problem, but I'm with you, change the cheap and easy part first, you might get lucky.

Ford Mustang 2002 Squeaks after serpentine belt replacement?

I changed out the serpentine belt about a week ago on a 3.8 mustang 2002. Now I hear some kind of squeal that sounds like like metal friction and it causes a high pitch squeal. It sounds like the sound is coming from the head. The exact spot is, where the pulley connected to the head, the one right in the middle.. Thats where the sound seems to be from. So what is causing it? Is it common? After installing serpentine belt, does anything need to be adjusted? Thanks.
Ford Mustang 2002 Squeaks after serpentine belt replacement?
I'll bet 50 cents you used an aftermarket belt. I have found the aftermarket belts are more likely to squeak than a genuine Ford Motorcraft belt. Ensure the belt tensioner, idler pulleys and all accessories are good and all the pulleys are clean and free of any contamination. Verify it is a belt problem by pouring some water over the belt while it is squeaking to verify the condition. If it changes the sound, or temporarily makes it go away, look harder at the belt and all surfaces it touches.
Ford Mustang 2002 Squeaks after serpentine belt replacement?
try some belt dressing can be purchased at wal mart. It could be also that the new belt is putting quite a bit more tension on something. The belt tensioner itself maybe.
I know exactly what the issue is here - you need to replace your serpentine belt idler pulley - it's the one you had to take the tension off in order to put the belt on. Likely what has happened is that you put the belt on the proper way but rastling with the pulley may have dislodged some rust or dirt which caused the bearing to become gritty. most of these pulleys are plastic so dirt can wear them out pretty quickly. try taking the pulley off and see how the bearing feels - if it spins freely, it;s fine, otherwise replace it. The other thing you need to check is that the belt isn't sitting crooked on the system. make sure that the belt is running in it's proper grooves and that it is not sitting over the edge of one of the pulleys. hope this helps!
I have 3.8 Mustang that had this problem for a long time before I figured it out. Start with checking the idler pulley, however that was not my problem. it has a part called a cam angle sensor. It takes place of the distributor. it is located at the top front of the engine. Instead of a distributor cap it just has a small cap about the size of an old electric choke. It mounts and adjusts just like an old style distributor, with a shaft and gear. If you pull it out(just like removing a distributor) make sure you mark it first and reinstall it exactly like it came out. You can get a new one at an auto parts store, listed under remanufactured distributors. You will need a special alignment tool to install the new one. I got the tool online from OTC tool company.
i believe the tension on your belt is off a bit,the idle pulley if it is seized up will make a whistling noise and not a sqweaking noise

How to change the belt of accesories on a honda civic 96?

haha i got that car i sold that peace of sht
How to change the belt of accesories on a honda civic 96?
I actually just did that on my 96 civic yesterday, its actually real easy, the power steering pump and alternator, all you have to do is loosen the mounting and adjusting bolt, swing it back and take the belt off, and for the AC belt you need to loosen the bolt on the pully (the one on the top, not the crank and not the compressor pulley, the remaining one) and pull the belt off. To get the AC belt all the way off you need to unbolt the mount that goes from the AC to the body and just slip the belt over that. Installation is reverse of removal

HOW TO CHANGE OR REPLACE THE SERPENTINE BELT ON A 1994 CAMARO
    1994 camaro serpentine belt?
Draw a diagram of the way the belt is on now. Use a 1/2%26quot; or 3/4%26quot; ratchet and a pipe that will fit over the end of the ratchet handle. You will see a square hole to place the drive end of the ratchet into and push or pull to remove and replace the belt. Look for a pulley that has an arm and spring attached to it. That is your tension pulley. On the face you will see the hole. Easy repair once you do it once. No need to pay the $50.00 to $100.00 a shop will demand.
    1994 camaro serpentine belt?
you need an automobile repair manual for that year and make of car to do this, as it is too hard to explain in here.
Follow the advice the others have offered here AND!!!! check to see if there is a belt routing diagram on a sticker under the hood somewhere. A real kick in the A$$ when you try to put the belt back on and forget how it was routed.........LOL.

Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?

1998 Toyota Corolla. Power steering greatly improved. Grumbling noises went down; but did not stop. How long is power steering on this car good for, or what to look for before it completely goes out?
Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?
The bearing on the pump may be bad. It could be the tensioner pulley.

Import/Toyota power steering pumps last a really long time. 10 years old is not out of the question.

Pumps can be had for $150.

    Tensioner for about the same.

Labor is only about an hour or two for either.
Serpentine belt replaced and power steering fluid changed. Still grumbling.?
It the will make that noise untill you get all the air out of the system. That is by turning the wheel to lock to the left or right, and the back to other lock. This mean as far the wheel will go. And hold the wheel there a few second. This will hap to be done about 5 times or more. Then check fluid, and top off. then do it again. It may take a few times to get all the air. If the noise does not stop the pump need to be replaced. And the same step used to get the air out.
How long is it good for? It's a Toyota! I had a 1990 Corolla ... drove it hard... Sold it in 2002.. no problems with power steering. If it ran low on oil due to a leak, then maybe some damage has been done. does the sterring feel fine.. does it jerk in ur hand?

gates is the best belt in the world there should be a diagram under the hood for your belt routing and normally all you need is a 3/8 socket wrench to do the job
The cost could go from 100.00 to 200.00 $ This belt can be a D.I.Y. job,On the hood ,or in front of raditor is a belt routing lable. It's a very tight spaced job,but pray first,

OK step 1 find a idler belt pully that has a square sholder on it,this is the adjuster,it should have a 3/8 o1/2 ratched hole in it. Step 2 Find a tool to fit in it , move it up or down. You will see it losen the belt in one direction. Step 3 Once you find out, losen tention, ease belt off alt, because it is the smallest pully.Pay close attention how belt is routed.pay close att:to water pump belt routing very important!!! Take Belt with you to your nearest advanced auto parts dealer or auto zone or NAPA. Let the tech match up belt for you. Step 4 reverse the process.Be carfull not to get finger under belt when setting tention. Leave alt pully for last.If you do not have a belt routing digram ask for a copy at auto parts .Good luck and GOD Bless... hoped i've helped.....

if it is a spring loaded ideler, find the square hole in the aluminum arm and insert a 3/8 or 1/2 inch drive ratchet, which ever is required, then pull the tension awawy from the belt, don;t have to remove the tesioner.
i own a repair shop, and the process is just about the same as a Chevy except you get on the other bolt and pull to release the tension off of it,it basically works the same way though, you might have to loosen the one bolt but don't back it out more than one turn, but you should just be able to lift upwards on it,and release the tension on it,good luck with it ,i hope this helps.

  • My serpentine belt is cracked?

It is only a small crack, and tomorrow i have a Trip from NC to NY. Should I postpone the trip one day, or take the trip and change the belt once I get to NY?
    My serpentine belt is cracked?
small cracks on the underside is normal for a high mileage belt. :( you should replace it when you can
    My serpentine belt is cracked?
If the crack is across the grooves it is considered 'normal'. If it's on the other side of the belt then you should change it soon.

ADDITION: Buy one and carry it with you with the tool you need to change it. Just in case.
It depends on how bad the crack is, usually I would replace it..but since you have the trip, you might not have time. Be prepared to get it done when you return and hopefully it holds out until then.
i would sud jest bringing a wallet ... you never know.... if it has been there for a while you wouldn't know... so dint think about it... cross your fingers... go for the ride... just be prepared to break down just in case... and dint push your car... take your time...
Delay the trip and get it replaced! The serpentine belt runs the car...if it snaps while on the trip, you will be stuck wherever this happens.
Serp belts only take a few minutes to change if you have a 1/2 inch drive rachet or breaker bar. If it breaks on the road the headache factor greatly outweights the prevent maintenance factor. Serp belts drive the alternator, A/C, water pump etc. It takes less time to change than to fuel up. Change it now.

    A21
Just change it before you leave.....if you want to you can try to take the trip and be risky...but if something happens and you are in the middle of nowhere you will be in worse trouble. They aren't that expensive or hard to change. See if a friend knows how....have a good trip either way! Good luck and be safe! Mandy
you shouldn't have to postpone your trip for a serpentine belt it onlt take like 15 minutes on most vehilcles.
Neither. It takes ten minutes to change the belt. Get one right now and take care of it.

Can I replace my serpentine belt in my 2001 pontiac grand am by myself?

Go to a parts store and get a repair manual and go home and sit down and do some reading up on it, it will show everything you should know about changing it out in the book but if you have any doubt about doing it either find someone that can do it or take it to a repair shop.

Anyone know how to loosen the serpentine belt on a taurus wagon?

I just bought an older (1999) ford taurus wagon and need to change the alternator. Where do they hide the bolts to adjust the tension of the idler? And are there any simple tricks to removing or replacing these alternators?

    Thanks a bunch.
Anyone know how to loosen the serpentine belt on a taurus wagon?
you need a special tool if you go to just about any auto parts store you can buy a kit it comes with all the sockets and handles that you will need you might not use it alot but you will be glad you have it when you need it....... all the other ideas could work but it is so close to the strut tower just by the kit it will save you money in band-aids
Anyone know how to loosen the serpentine belt on a taurus wagon?
stick a 3/8 ratchet in the hole and move it to make it looser. you can't adjust the tension. They are set, you just rotate it with a ratchet.
it takes a special wrench but you should be able to push it in the direction to loosen it with your hand spring loaded try that.
in the middle of your tension-er there is a bolt get a wrench.and simply turn the bolt and that will give you play to remove your belt .there is no way to adjust that spring loaded tension-er pulley..if its bad replace it..good luck
the hole doug w. is talking about is in the belt tensioner,it may be 1/2 instead of 3/8 i just helped my son change a belt on his 95 couger %26amp; it was 1/2.just put the breaker bar or ratchet in the square hole in the tensioner %26amp; rotate clockwise to loosen the preload off of the tensioner %26amp; the belt comes right off!
there are two types of tensioner adjusters.one type has a squre hole cut out in it so you can insert a rachet or breaker bar into it and either push or pull to release tension.the other type has a hex head bolt on it usually a 14mm socket on a rachet will dp the trick and again you either push or pull
The tensioner is spring loaded, use a break bar or ratchet to pull the tensioner in and release the belt. This is a square hole the size of the ratchet

What way does the serpentine belt go on a 1995 Pontiac Grand am?

I changed my out my altenator and I can't rember which the serpintine belt goes on
What way does the serpentine belt go on a 1995 Pontiac Grand am?
the sticker will be on the left hand side on the front suspension thing cap or whatever you want to call it if its not then its goes around the alternator on the top of power steering pump pulley then under water pump pulley around a/c compressor than goes to the engine drive pulley and around it ( big pulley and made of metal on the bottom middle of the engine)and then don't get confused goes the rough side up on the tensioner
What way does the serpentine belt go on a 1995 Pontiac Grand am?
There is usually a diagram under the hood somewhere. You can probably find one on the Gates Belt site. Look at the link below.
There is a diagram showing the routing of the belt, it is located on a sticker in the engine compartment or in the glove box.... if this does not help then contact your local dealer and talk to a tech there !!!!!!

Power steering, alternator %26amp; aircon belts.

These belts are %26quot;poly V%26quot; types, they are a little more expensive than a standard V- belt, but have a longer life.

You don't have any belt that could be classified as a %26quot;serpentine%26quot; belt. These are a single belt that snakes its way around all the accessories fitted to an engine, that's why they're referred to as %26quot;serpentine%26quot;.

  • How do you install the serpentine belt on a 1995 Chevy barreta 2.2l engine?

I changed the water pump and took off the belt ok and now am having difficulty installing the belt again. Can you provide a step by step on how to put the belt back on? The more details the better.
How do you install the serpentine belt on a 1995 Chevy barreta 2.2l engine?
If you look on the engine there will be a belt tensioner pulley that is smaller than the other pulleys. this is spring loaded and adjusts by use of a 3/8%26quot; ratchet. you line up the new belt and release the tension on the pulley, and then install belt around the pulleys and then let the tension come back by letting the tensioner %26quot;go%26quot;. the spring loaded action should give your belt the proper amount of tension. Hope this helps
How do you install the serpentine belt on a 1995 Chevy barreta 2.2l engine?
there should be a sticker around the top of the radiator area(under the hood) showing the belt configuation
There should be a picture under the hood of how the belt should look on the pulleys
usually in a small car like that all you have to do is push down on the pulley
There is usually a diagram under the hood of the car. Usually on the radiator cover or the strut mounts.Get the belt on the bottom ,or lowest pulleys first. Then keeping tention on the belt feed it on to the next pully up. If the pulley has grooves then of course thats the part the ribbed side of the belt should touch. Smoo is the back side of the belt. look for a diagram that looks like the one on this web site.

First you need a long wrench or a regular wrench with a cheater bar that will fit the idler pulley. Install the belt according to the diagram under the hood leaving out the idler pulley. When the belt is around all pulleys, use the wrench to rotate the idler pulley until you can get the belt underneath of it. It is there to create tension. Thats the only way anybody does it.

Grinding noise in front end of 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ Quadra Drive?

When turning left or at approximately 50 mph there is a grinding/rubbing noise coming from the front end on the drivers side. I tried changing the drivers side front tire as I thought it may be a shilfted belt and I changed the serpentine belt to see if that was causing it. No luck. I checked the transmission fluid and it seems like it's overfilled. I was also told maybe the idler pulley was causing it and it should be replaced. It only has 35,000 miles on it. Any advice would be appreciated.

The brakes are a year old and working perfectly with no pulse when they are applied. Alignment is fine too with no shaking in the steering wheel at any speed.
Grinding noise in front end of 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ Quadra Drive?
THis could be a wheel bearing, or a CV joint that is bad. It is unlikely to be in the differential if it only does it turning left under 50mph.
Grinding noise in front end of 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ Quadra Drive?
check your wheel and axle bearings
Well it won't go away and you obviously are NOT a Jeep mechanic--so go to the dealer and let them work it out--they have to warranty the work--you in the driveway playing guessing games just won't get it done and there is no promises from any guy suggesting stuff that has nothing to do with it. If it is a dangerous problem or a problem that is serious, you could be saving a bigger repair bill or even your own life. Stop wasting time.
This is most probably caused by difrential problems. This happend on one of my mitisi evos and it was caused by the active yaw controle not working properly. Made a real grinding noise asif the wheel was rubbing on the arch. Get the ayc or diffrential cheacked

When I start my car there is a belt that screeches. Is this the timing belt or the serpentine belt?

I believe I have never changed either of these belts and my car has about 155,000 miles on it. Or is this something I should just take to a mechanic to check out. I'm asking this first, because I see a bunch of coupons in the newspaper, for the timing belt change. But my friend stated to get everything done(timing belt, serpentine belt, %26amp; water pump), while the mechanic is around that area anyways. But I don't have that much money to spend on fixing it.
When I start my car there is a belt that screeches. Is this the timing belt or the serpentine belt?
it's the serpentine belt ...if it were the timing belt it wouldn't start
When I start my car there is a belt that screeches. Is this the timing belt or the serpentine belt?
    Serpentine belt

If it were the timing belt your engine would not be in time and would not run at all.

You are on borrowed time with your timing belt. It should be changed. If you have an interference style engine, if the belt fails your valves will crash into your pistions. This can completely destroy your engine.

When replacing your timing belt, it is a good idea to have the serpentine belt and water pump replaced as these items are already being removed to access the timing belt. So it should not cost any more in labor.

Get some estimates from a few mechanics.
Well, you were due for a timing belt change(80,000). It does not screech (It snaps) then it is a motor job%26gt;couple thousand bucks%26lt; Just to save a couple of bucks - you will lose the car.%26gt;it becomes worthless%26lt;.

You pay alot for mechanic's time, so while he is in the same area as all the parts, do them all in one shot. Saves you coming back again. Don't buy groceries for a week. That should cover it. Get an estimate first. The mechanic knows how long it will take him and he will also know the cost of the parts and roughly how long it will take him to do the job.
It could be, or possibly fan / a/c belt?

I had a simlar problem on my car, especially in cold weather, after I got the belts replaced the screeching stopped.

If you're getting all of those replaced at the same time you're probably looking at $500+ for parts/labor.
pulley's screech and squeak not belts. $100 says its an idler pulley, start the car up with someone under the hood to locate the sound. Also touch the pulleys (with the engine off) and see if any are loose. You should also replace your belt just because 155k is a long time on a belt. Good Luck!
i think you should look at the serpentine belt for cracks or excessive wear if you see that then you should change your serpentine belt and the timing belt im not real sure about that, the water pump usually has a long working period and i wouldnt worry about it if there is no leaks.
its more likely to be the water pump/alternator belt give it a squirt of WD 40 and see if it cures the noise

2002 Hyundai Accent Timing & Serpentine Belt Replacement Costs?

I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent 2 door and need to get the timing belt and serpentine belts replaced. Does anyone know how much this might cost? I know timing belt changes start out at at least $320, but I'm curious to know the total cost plus the serpentine belt. Thanks.
2002 Hyundai Accent Timing %26amp; Serpentine Belt Replacement Costs?
You shouldn't have both. The 02 Accent should have a Timing Belt. But if I remember correctly, the water pump should be replaced at the same time.

I had a 00 Elantra. The Estimates I received ranged from $415 to $700. So shop around. Especially these days, don't just take the 1st estimate you receive, people will compete for your business. And it's a common enough part that you should be able to get an honest estimate.
2002 Hyundai Accent Timing %26amp; Serpentine Belt Replacement Costs?
Hmmm, timing and serpentine should be the same thing. Perhaps not, but on most cars it is. 3 to 4 hundred sounds about right, though. Question is, did it break while you were driving it? If you were, oh dear!
i would say about 400 to 450.00 with tax serpentine belt on the same side as timingcover that has to come off anyways to access and finish the ttimingbelt job, now timing belt tensioner's and water pump may be extra if needed. i worked in a shop as a service adviser for 8 years.

  • How do you change a serpentine belt on a supercharged engine--I put the make of car below?

    1994 buick park avenue -- 3800 series

which pulleys do you put in around..do you know off any diagrams or have any helpful links
How do you change a serpentine belt on a supercharged engine--I put the make of car below?
There should be a decal under the hood that shows belt routing. Also most auto supply stores will print out a picture of it for you. (autozone, o'reilly's) or if the old belt is still on, make a drawing of the belt routing.
How do you change a serpentine belt on a supercharged engine--I put the make of car below?
mine and drew it and got it fixed. I wrote more above on what happened and all I know is the part was way less than I thought it would be and was last time and he fixed it free and today I got it back and the stress is gone.

thank you to every one who answered and tried to help. yay it's fixed.

Go to the dealership and ask to look at the service manual. It has a correct diagram in it or you can order a new diagram to go on the radiator frame.
Always OVER the supercharger pulley and OVER the crank pulley. The rest you should be able to figure out.

I've never seen a supercharger pulley have a belt under it...it would slip too much. I can vouch that all roots type superchargers have belts over the pulley; it's not going to be any different on centrifugals. You have a roots charger, most factory superchargers are roots type (on GM mainly eaton m92s and m62s).

Here's a shot of series 2 engine, as you can tell the routing is kind of insane. Should be similar to this. 2 belts.

Chirping question on my 2004 infiniti i35?

i have a 2004 infiniti i35. whenever the rpms pass somewhere between 925 and 975, it makes a chirping noise. we sent it in for warranty repair at infiniti. they changed the serpentine belts, but the chirping sound still exists. does anyone have a similar problem or know what the problem is? thanks.

Take it to the Nissan Dealership and ask them. It's the same engine that's put in Maximas, Altimas, and many other Nissans. They have probably run across it before.

I have a g35 and have had nothing but problems with my Infiniti dealership. Our cross town Nissan dealership blows them out of the water, service wise. You don't get the free coffee that the Infiniti dealership gives out, but i'll take the alternative.

pop the hood and have someone listen at the engine while you gently rev the engine to recreate the sound and try to pinpoint it. could be a squeaky power steering pump, water pump, a/c compressor or evaporator

I just tried to change the serpentine belt in my 2001 ford mustang gt (4.6L) and i started to smell a?

burnt rubber smell after i drove it for a few miles, i was going to replace it but when i tried to i found out the autozone gave me the wrong size belt so i had to put the old one back on. it was very worn out and full of cracks. i popped the hood after smelling the burnt rubber and the belt was installed like it should be so what could be causing this smell?

If you look by the crankshaft pulley, power steering side, you will find stud that sticks out about an inch or two. When you put the belt on you may have the belt riding on that part of the stud. I've done that on crown Vic's with 4.6L.

maybe you did not install it correctly on the grooves? make sure that it is aligned on all of the pulleys

What might be making the squeeking sound in my Jeep?

Last month I changed the serpentine belt so I'm pretty sure my belt is good. But the last few days I've noticed a squeeking sound...almost like a bad belt for the first several minutes that I am driving. It's from the engine compartment, I can tell that. And it has been VERY cold here in the midwest if that means anything. Any ideas where to look and what to look for?
What might be making the squeeking sound in my Jeep?
If it's an older Jeep that doesn't have a spring loaded tensioner pulley, you probably just don't have the belt tight enough.
What might be making the squeeking sound in my Jeep?
possibly the belt. could be a bearing going out of the alt, a/c compressor, pulley. try put some belt dressing on it and see if that helps.

I tried to change the serpentine belt on my car, but...?

even though i hear its pretty easy this belt that broke on my isuzu trooper 98 its goes a little inside the engine somewhere or some like that it looks like i have to take something off to do it, am i just better off taking it to a mechanic, is fo how much will it cost me to just change it if i already have the belt?
I tried to change the serpentine belt on my car, but...?
If the belt only charges your battery and ac, it is safe to drive it to the service station. You still run the risk of your battery dying though.

If that broken belt drives your waterpump, STOP! You will overheat and damage your engine. Have it towed or fixed there.

The belt likely drives your power steering, so consider this.
I tried to change the serpentine belt on my car, but...?
It ususally not easy and it also not cheap to get done. on my daughters 89 Chrysler lebaron it was $300 plus the belt
I believe the Trooper is a rear wheel drive car. If so the belt would be a piece of cake to change. If its front wheel drive with the engine in sideways it could be tricky-i generally just pass that off to my friend to fix when one of my front wheel drive cars snaps a fan belt.

Regardless in either case a mechanic/garage is gonna soak you for hundreds. They are rip off artists.

I have read this question and your other question related to this and i would like to let you know that all of these people telling you that you are gonna destroy your car by trying to drive it for 2 miles without the belt have no clue what they are talking about. If the car is cold when you first start it there is no way it could overheat within 2 miles. No way at all. I drove mine for around 7 miles the other day without the belt-did not even start to get hot. Just make it a straight trip-dont give the car time to warm up or anything. Just jump in it, start it and go. If that car would overheat and damage the engine within 2 miles i would buy you a new engine-cause i know it just cant happen. 20 miles might be pushing it--2 miles no way would it hurt anything.

On the other hand your serpentine belt turns your alternator which keeps your battery charged. Without it your battery could go dead quite quick leaving you stranded. If your battery is good and strong it will be ok for 2 miles-regardless you might want to have someone follow you just in case.
its easy just get a wrench usually a 5/8 and the diagram is

usually some where on the front of the engine compartment

on top of the radiator housing.
