What's the formula for changing a serpentine belt? # Cracks per inch?

the general rule that i was taught was if cracks are less than 1/4 inch apart then replace it. But according to Haynes for my vehicle cracks do not indicate a bad belt only when the ribs actually come off it needs replacing.|||go buy a new goodyear belt they come with pre cut cracks they need to crack to flex over the backward pullies

the belt should last 80 000 miles or more

|||If there are a lot of cracks in it change it. It is a lot better than being broke down along the highway. The towing charge alone will be more than the belt.|||I have heard 10 cracks per an inch... If its old with cracking you should replace it anyways, for piece of mind...|||E=MC squared|||if you go to the trouble to take it off and it has cracks replace it if you have the money.|||more than 1 crack per inch is deamed bad
