I have a 1991 buick century and I just changed the Harmonic Balance. After I put back the serpentine belt, ?

my car would not start at all. A friend of mine told me to take back off the serpentine belt and try to start it, and it didn't start then either. Any suggestions?!?!

do you have trouble parking? I heard that buicks are hard to turn...
I have a 1991 buick century and I just changed the Harmonic Balance. After I put back the serpentine belt, ?
Did you damage or unplug the crankshaft position sensor while doing this???

the harmonic balancer has to be set properly with the sensor or it will not start.
it,s probably the same as my 88 olds. when you change the balancer you have to alighn the fins on the balancer between the crank sensor. if the keyway isn,t there then when you cranked the engine you ruined the sensor. make sure the damper is alighned with the keyway.

Is a Timing belt same as a serpentine belt?

when my wife went to the KIA dealership they wanted to charge her $400 for a timing belt install, told her it was also called a serpentine belt, but actually I'm not sure, that's why I'm asking. I thought most newer cars had only a serpentine belt these days. Is $400 the going rate on an import? Wouldn't a belt change be in most tune ups? sounds like the dealer is overcharging as always. Thanks.
Is a Timing belt same as a serpentine belt?
Simple answer no.

==== DETAIL ====

Timing belt drives the cams (the valves that opens and closes to let the pistons of your engine breath). Often timing belt will also drive the water pump (but not always).

The serpentine belt drives everything else like the AC compressor, alternator, power steering.

Usually when you open the hood of your car you will be able to see a black belt %26quot;snaking%26quot; around lots of pulley. That's why it is called serpentine belt. The timing belt is usually hidden inside few covers so not visible.

All Over Head Cam (or Over Head Valve) cars have timing belts (or timing chain). $400 for timing belt is little bit high but not for the dealer. As a comparison, I own an Audi A4 and the Audi dealer (in NYC) wants $1300 for timing belt %26amp; water pump ($900 for just the timing belt).

The cost of sepentine belt (part) is very cheap so the dealer might want to just replace that too (given they would have to take that off during the timing belt also). Your wife could have confused this as saying %26quot;they are the saming thing.%26quot;

When you get your timing belt done, ask if the water pump is driven by the timing belt. If it is, you should get it replaced together. The reason is that the parts are fairly cheap but the labor is pretty high to get to these parts, so replaced them together (to save $$ down the line). Otherwise you will be spending another $400 few thousand mile down the road just to do the water pump.

These days, the only new part that goes into a tune-up is new spark plugs.

Good luck.

A timing belt goes between the crankshaft and the cam (which make the valves open and close).

A serpentine belt goes between the crankshaft and the accessories (ie the alternator, power steering pum, A/C compressor, etc, etc.

The answer is no

Dave
generally they are not the same however a few cars do use the same belt for all functions!
serpentine describes the type of belt. It's flat with ribs as opposed to a V belt. It can be used for different applications. Also many timing belts are very difficult to access, so $400 may be reasonable. A timing belt change isn't included in a tune up.
$400 dollars to change a Timing Belt is probably about right.

A timing belt needs to be changes every 60K - 70K miles. This belt is inside the engine and is the mechanism that opens and closes the valves. If it breaks while you are driving, you're looking at a seriously damaged engine and major repairs. So all car makers recommend timing belt changes at a regular interval.

A serpentine belt is what we used to call a fan belt. But now they are longer, wider and one belt runs everything. If it is wearing out you should be able to see the stress on the belt. It shouldn't cost more than $75 to change a serpentine belt.
No. A timing belt is used to keep the engine crankshaft and valve train properly sequenced or timed. A serpentine belt runs engine accessory drive items like the water pump, alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner etc. I,m not a KIA mechanic but timing belt installations can be tricky and expensive.
Serpentine belts drive A/C alternator and power steering. Camshaft belts have teeth that engage cogs. to keep the valves opening at the right times. Tune-up term these days is a set of spark plugs replaced at 60 to 100,thousand miles only when the check engine light turns on. $400 actually sounds like a good deal for timing belt job guaranteed at dealer. But what else can they find under the timing cover while there in there? Three engine oil seals for starters... Add $100 seals and labor... Water Pump sir you really must think that the water pump could fail soon costing you all this labor lets do it now while the front is off the engine...$200 more And our technician noticed the top and bottom radiator hoses look soft brittle cracked add $90...Then for the culpable emissions service injector flush designed to flush money out of your wallet into there's (not required maintenance) look at maintenance in your owners manual. KIA and parent company Hyundai get real weird about we recommend it and you don't do it! We Void your limited 100000 mile power train warranty. That is why it is limited
I don't know anything about Kia's, but I have a 2001 Ford Escort ZX2. It has both a serpentine belt (aka drive belt) and a timing belt (which you can't see). The timing belt is responsible for synchronizing various parts in your engine so that it has the correct firing times for each cylinder, while the serpentine belt only provides power to the accessories (power steering, a/c, etc). In some cars, the water pump is run by the serpentine belt, which usually means it is fairly accessible and easy to change. In my car, the water pump is actually installed in the lower part of the engine and is driven by the timing belt. So if you have to get the timing belt changed, you should consider having other parts in that vicinity changed (to save on future labor costs) if you have a high mileage car. For my car, it would cost an arm and a leg (and possibly a kidney) to have only the water pump changed...so I will definitely have it changed when I get a new timing belt.

$400 sounds reasonable for having the timing belt replaced, assuming your car does have one....and also assuming that it's an ordeal to change the timing belt. In my car, various plastic covers/guards have to be removed, motor has to be dropped slightly (which could mean it has to be disconnected from the tranny...not sure). So in my car, it is an ordeal. Luckily, the service manual for my car says the timing belt should be changed every 130,000 miles...so not such a big deal. You should definitely check your service manual and see when it recommends changing the timing belt...and compare it to your actual mileage.

One last thing...some engines can be completely ruined if the timing belt breaks while driving. The term to describe this is interference. Some engines are interference engines, and some are non-interference engines. An interference engine (which you might have) would most likely be ruined if the timing belt breaks, so don't go too far over the suggested mileage before replacement...you definitely don't want it to break on you. Call a couple of independent car shops and ask them if they know what the mileage rating for your car's timing belt is. Dealerships are usually less than honest. If your car is under warranty, the timing belt should be covered if it fails under the suggested mileage. Otherwise, I would have an independent garage do the work. But do your research and find a decent and reputable mechanic. Ask them if there are any other parts that you should change that are in the timing belt area (like water pump, tensioner pulley, etc)...assuming it would save you a significant amount of money in future labor costs.
A timing belt is in most cases now days serpentine. The difference is the timing belt isn't located just under the hood. It actually hides behind the front cover on the engine itself. I don't want you to confuse the drive belt for your accessories on the engine with the timing belt. Yes, it may sound like alot of money to replace, but if you don't have the proper tools to keep and find top dead center of the number one cylinder. That could be bad news. In my opinion, good price. I would charge more.
They are NOT the same thing. Previous poster was correct about function of serpentine belt, however all auto engines have a timing belt or chain, not just overhead cam engines.

Not having the specifics of your car, it's hard to say if 400 is reasonable or not. Reputable shops, dealer or independent, determine repair costs using %26quot;book time%26quot;. In other words, for any repair, for any vehicle, there is a listed repair time associated. Shop labor rates vary quite a bit from dealership to independent so compare labor rates. I would advise dealing only with shops whose mechanics are ASA certified.

In any case, failure to replace a bad timing belt, (if it is indeed bad), WILL lead to far more costly repairs that will make the timing belt costs seem insignificant.

  • The mechanic said my toyota corolla 1998 serpentine belt is broken...?

I went for an oil change %26amp; the mechanic said serpentine belt needs to be replaced as it has cracks. He gave me a quote on $70 to replace it. I was wondering if this has happened to other people? Which is the cheapest place to get it replaced. Is it something urgent? Any advice will be appreciated...
The mechanic said my toyota corolla 1998 serpentine belt is broken...?
Labor is typically 70-90 dollars an hour depending on where you go, so that seems like a very good price.

I'd say, just do it, that isn't a bad price at all.
The mechanic said my toyota corolla 1998 serpentine belt is broken...?
A serpentine belt is a single multi ribbed drive belt that drives all engine driven components such as:-

    Power steering pump

    Alternator

    Water pump

    A/C Compressor

    Air pump (if fitted)

This belt is possibly 5 to 6 feet long and it is automatically tensioned by a spring loaded tensioner. There is an indicator on the tensioner that indicates the amount of stretch of the belt as it ages and beyond a certain point the belt should be replaced, even if it looks otherwise OK. A small amount of cracking across the ribs is acceptable and even normal. Over time these cracks become more numerous and larger and the belt needs replacing. Some manufacturers recommend automatic replacement at about 100,000Kms (60,000miles)

If the belt breaks you will loose all your engine driven components, including power steering and there is a strong risk of engine damage, especially to the crank angle sensor as the broken belt is flying around at high speed.

$70.00 is an entirely reasonable price to replace this belt.
I just replaced the belt on one of my Prizms (same engine/chassis as the Corolla) and it was $28.38 + tax from the Toyota dealer, and it took me about 15 minutes, so I think $70 should include parts and labor.

I recommend dealing with a mechanic who is familiar with Toyota's because the belt tensioners are prone to failing, and a bad tensioner will shorten the life of the belt. There's a rattling/light knocking sound from the belt at idle when it's bad.
$70 is a very reasonable price to pay for a serpentine replacement. If you still want to save more and learn something in the process, buy the Haynes manual and learn how to replace it.once you alredy know it should take you about 1 minute to do thewhole process.good luck.

    DIFFICULTY RATING FROM 1 THRU 10 = 2
$50 for belt and $70 for labor is too high go to auto zone buy the belt and get a friend to replace it if you are not mechanically inclined or buy the haynes manual for the car it will give you step by step instructions on how to replace the belt, belt and book shouldn't cost much more than $50 saving $70 doing it yourself priceless!
duhhhhhh of course it's urgent you're accesories on the front of your engine wont work without the belt. price wise it's cheapest to buy the belt at your local auto parts store and do it yourself, it's really easy!
get the belt changed....if it breaks you can damage the engine plus it can be expensive to get towed off the freeway

$70 is cheap for piece of mind
If it breaks, your alternator, water pump and A/C will stop working and your car will die.

$70 is not a bad price to replace it.
it sounds reasonable, since you never had it replaced before. Does the quote include the belt?

How to get the serpentine belt on a 94 ford Taurus??????

i was changing the water pump on my wife's 1994 ford Taurus and i have everything put back together but the serpentine belt. and i can not for the life of me get it on. Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How to get the serpentine belt on a 94 ford Taurus??????
lookunder the hood and everywhere else in the engine compartment for a diagram. It left the factory with one. There should be one spring loaded tension pully that you will need to take the tension off temporarily with a wrench as the last step in installin the belt. You may as well replace the belt while you have it off, and the auto parts store should also have a diagram for it. good luck.
How to get the serpentine belt on a 94 ford Taurus??????
You need a special tool. They will have it at Auto Zone, etc. There is a tensioner which is getting in your way, you use the tool to pull it back and then the belt easily slips on

You can probably borrow the tool, to buy it is about $50, but you need it for every belt change
well what you do need are sockets or hand tools, and you'll need to losen the parts that your belt goes to so that youll be able to fit it on there...
There is a pulley that is used for tensioning the belt. I think is uses a 14mm Allen wrench. Install the belt over all the pullys except the tensioner, then use the wrench to pull the tensioner inwards toward the center of the motor and slip the belt over the pulley and release the tension on it and you're done.

The 2000 Neon, of which I have one, does not have a serpentine belt. It has two accessory belts. Get a repair manual at AutoZone or similar place which will show all of the steps.

Can i start my 1994 crown vic without the serpentine belt?

ok i'm going to change my belt so i want to start it up without the belt on it so i see how quiet my engine sounds without the big fan running will any damage occur just for a sec while running without a belt
Can i start my 1994 crown vic without the serpentine belt?
You wont get very far since your alternator isnt keeping the battery charged. Id give it 10 minutes tops. Dont do it.

No power steering, no water pump, just wont end well.

Edit: Idk who gave me thumbs down because they're definitely mistaken. Probably the same person who thinks the alternator will keep the car from starting Haha
Can i start my 1994 crown vic without the serpentine belt?
I have an 03 crown vic. It will be fine for a very short time. But if you leave it off too long, the battery will die (no alt) and it may overheat because the water pump runs off of the serpentine. But for a short time it would be ok.
of course you can but I wouldn't recommend driving it, no power steering no power brakes would take a while to over heat and battery will run can for a long time without alternator
You wont damage the car without the belt. If you run it too long it will overheat. You can run it for a about 5 minutes Keep your eye on the temp gage
i would,nt try that especially by it having a computer.
    Yes. All will be fine.
just don't let it run too long.
    i wouldn%26quot;t do that

I'm an old fart, and all my cars are older than 1966, but I stopped to help a guy with a serpentine belt on his Chevy SUV, and I was pleasantly surprised that it's the easiest thing in the world to do!

On his car (the only serpentine belt I've ever installed), there was a tensioner spring that was pulled back using a half-inch drive socket wrench, then you simply lift the belt onto the pully and let go of the wrench. Takes about 2 minutes.

If your mechanic wants $120 to do that job, get another mechanic . . you're getting reamed!

    .
How much does it cost to have a serpentine belt replaced?
you get rip by those fast lube place. First your car don't have a Serpentine belt. It should have 3 Micro v belts. Each cost from 10 to 18 bucks, and labor to replace all 3 belts is .8 of an hour. But TBH I don't think you need the new belt for your car. Call a repair shop and check the price.
I work at a GMC dealership and we charge $89.95 to replace most serp. belts. They are not Honda's but $120 seems sort of steep to me.
you certainly got ripped off on the catalyic converter!, thats crazy!, I would find another shop for sure, a serpentine belt usuually costs about 20 to 30 dollars and takes about five minutes to put on.

    1998 Toyota Avalon belts?

I went to a Jiffy Lube for an oil change and they recommended I get my Serpentine belt replaced. I go to Pep Boys later to do that and they say, %26quot;Your car doesn't have a Serpentine belt. But your Alternator Drive belt and Power Steering Belt need changing.%26quot; So I tell them to go for it. THEN my dad tells me a mechanic friend of his recommened I get my Timing Belt changed. I refer to my manual and it tells me NOTHING about ANY belts. Help!
    1998 Toyota Avalon belts?
Your 1998 Avalon most certainly came with a serpentine style (multi-ribbed) belt for the a/c and alternator drive, and a second one for the power steering! The Gates part number for the alt/ac is K060407, and for the ps is K040347. Timing belt is another (unrelated to your serp belts) part, and is being recommended as a preventative maintenance item. A broken timing belt will leave you stranded, but will not destroy the valves %26amp; pistons like some engines do when they break a timing belt. If you decide to have the timing belt done, do the water pump, too. Saves the time of getting in there twice down the road!

Can I change the serpentine belt in my v.w. passat without going to a mechanic?
If you can locate the tensioner, this rides on the back of the belt

and is spring loaded I would give it a shot. but if the a c compressor is driven by a v-belt and must come off first, then I

would reconisider. the routing of all serpentine belts are on a sticker under the hood someware. to remove the belt on the a c

compressor requires removing the tire and crawling under the car

and you will need a set of metric allen wrenches on a 3/8 drive socket set and another person. it is a pain

If you don't know what tools you need; I would suggest taking it to a mechanic.

It is doable but you need some mechanical knowledge and to get the belt tight enough but not too tight.
a breaker bar 1/2 in pull back tensioner take off old belt put new one on in reverse of taking off
Try this: autozonecom/servlet/uibroker They will explain to you how to do it and what tools you need.

Go over each and every pully, and apply lithium grease at the connection points to the motor. My 98' blazer had a simular problem. It ended up being the alternator seizing up on me. Check your fan also! Lube the snot out of your cooling fan! And, yes, as a preventative, you should go ahead and change out your idler pullies. Oh, and it couldn't hurt to condition your belt every 3K miles, especially if you live in the cold!

the idler pulley requires either a 15mm wrench or it may have a square hole where a 3/8s or 1/2 in.ratchet will fit.
Look on the radiator cover there should be a sticker telling you inwhat direction to turn the tensioner. Most tensiones have a 3/8 square in them so you can use a 3/8 ratchet to pull on them to get the belt off.

How do you change a serpentine belt?

You can't change the serpentine belt. It really has to want to change.
How do you change a serpentine belt?
look for the tension pulley, it has a hex nut, that a socket and breaker bar can release the tension to let the belt slack off. You may find help to do this, as it is easier with a third hand.
How do you change a serpentine belt?
    Jeep or Ford/GM?

GM has an auto tensioner which when moved away from the belt (i cannot say counterclockwise or clockwise because it can change)

it will loosen the belt. usualy you can stick either a 1/2 breaker bar or a 3/8 ratchet into the provided %26quot;hole%26quot; to move the tensioner.

instalation is reverse of removal but keep in mind the routing of the belt, OR locate the belt routing diagram under the hood. some come with extra routing options when certain accesories are installed. know what you have installed before you reroute the new belt.

JEEP/chrysler (some models)these you usualy have to loosen 2-3 bolts on the power steering pump and push the pump toward the engine. keep in mind the belt routing. if you are inexperienced in the automotive area it is advised you leave the Jeeps and chryslers to an experienced person be it your neighbor kid whos wrenchin on his tuner all the way up to a dealer because belt tension settings on these are crutial.
When you go to the parts store and buy the belt get a cheap repair manual from the rack for your vehicle. Cost is about $12. It will give you easy to follow instructions with pictures and then is ready for the next repair you have to make. I am not a mechanic and don't have money to pay one and with this book, I can fix anything.
Its easy to change but hard to get at,. Look for the pulley that the top of the belt rides on it. The ribbed side will be facing up. It has a notch near the end of it where a socket wrench can fit in it but your arm might not be able to reach it. I use a solid piece of pipe and try to press down enough on the top of the pulley to gain some slack in the belt so I can pull it off from another pulley. Depending on the way your belt travels is how you determine which way to push or pull the pulley.

Could a replacement of the serpentine belt cause air pockets? ?
i just had my serpentine belt replaced last week, and so far, nothing's changed actually in my car or my driving. so maybe, your problem could be something else.(?)
I don't see how a serpentine belt would play any role in air pockets whatsoever (unless something was opened in the cooling system the same time it was opened). Yes you can drive the car if you have air pockets, but I would strongly suggest driving around with a jug full of coolant and VERY often check the coolant level and attempt to keep it topped off.
Changing the serpentine belt has nothing to do with air in the cooling system.

How do I change my serpentine belt for a 1997 pontiac firebird?
i just had to do this on my car because the idler pully was squeeking like there was no tomorrow replace both belts at the same time for good measure since it cheap just loosen one of the pulleys and slide it around buy the belt and they tighten it back up tourque it to spec and you are finethe diagram is on the front fender drivers side and its a sticker
How do I change my serpentine belt for a 1997 pontiac firebird?
The belt routing diagram should be posted somewhere conspicuously in your engine bay. My '89 Camaro has it on the radiator shroud.
Using a 9/16(I think) on the belt tensioner assemably bolt, turn it the left(facing the engine). In order, to release the pressure applied on the belt. Just be sure you know (or have that diagram handie) how the belt goes back on. Once you release the pressure w/ the tensioner(which requires some muscle) the belt will just fall off.

    Good luck!

1995 plymouth voyager van squealing after serpentine belt change?

I've been driving my grandmother's van while I save up some money to get myself a car. Now, I'm totally grateful that she's letting me use it, but she's basically NEVER done any maintenance on this thing. Seriously, we pulled out lawn mower spark plugs from it? And the serpentine belt was getting munched so I had it changed and come to find out it was the one it came with originally! This sucker has 100k on it so....

Anyway, I'm in college and saving like I said so I don't have hundreds of dollars to thrown down on on it if it's going to start falling apart. Before the belt change, it didn't squeal or anything, no problems. Now, when the heater is on, OR if I turn the wheel it squeals horribly. It also does this if it's in park and you turn the wheel either way. The power steering also seems to be going out... Does it seem the belt is probably loose? I had it done at Jiffy Lube so I think I'll bring it back for them to look at.
1995 plymouth voyager van squealing after serpentine belt change?
Take it back to Jiffy Lube...they probably put the belt on wrong since you say that you've suddenly started having power steering problems...if you find that it is properly installed, you can get a can of belt dressing to spray on the pulleys every once in a while that should help with the squealing
1995 plymouth voyager van squealing after serpentine belt change?
Try to pour some pop on the belt... If the squealing goes away, you know it is the belt. If the noise is still there, then it points to a pulley gone bad. Grab the belt and see how much you can pull it. to much pull and it is to loose. The best thing you can do though would be to take it back to Jiffy Lube and let them know the problem and when it started..
It sounds like the belt tensioner is not working properly. If it doesn't keep the tension on the belt it will squeal. Also check the level of the power steering fluid.

How do I change the belt on a 01 chevy silverado?

I need to change the serpentine belt on my truck and I was wondering if anyone had any pointers on doing it.
How do I change the belt on a 01 chevy silverado?
I have a Silverado, put the box end of a combination wrench on the bolt head of the tensioner (it's the spring loaded pulley up top) take a second large box end then lock it on the open end of the first for leverage. Apply pressure counter clockwise to release pressure from the belt and remove. place the new one in it's place and repeat only this time you are putting it on rather then off. You may want to draw a diagram to guide you in replacing the old ones pathe if this is your first time.
How do I change the belt on a 01 chevy silverado?
Take it to the garage---1st pointer of the day. If you are asking us you have no idea what has to be done...Watch the mechanic when he changes the belt...
If it is only one belt I'm sure it makes alot of turns under and over your pulleys. If you think you will not remember the route of the belt it is a good idea to take a clear picture of the belt before you take it off. Also there is an adjusting pulley, find id and loosen that, it should be all you need to loosen. If your engine has more than one, It is going to be one for your power steering and one for everything else. In that case you need to loosen the power steering pump and the alternator. good luck.
there should be a diagram for it under your hood but if you dont know how to do it bring it to a mechanic and ask him to show you.

Is there an easier way to replace the serpentine belt on a 1998 buick lesabre?
    V-6 or what engine? ~:)+
    Cut/pasted from website.

I have a 98 buick lesabre limited and I changed the belt without jacking the motor or removing the motor mount. There is a slot about a 1/4%26quot; wide the belt slips through so you don't have to remove anything. After studying it for a little bit it is very easy!

    OR:

The engine support bracket does not need to be removed. Only remove the lower bolt and spacer. (18 mm) regular socket will do the trick. One the bolt is removed, removed the spacer by wiggling it around. Place the belt on and then replace spacer and bolt.

How to change a belt on a 1996 plymouth breeze?

We are trying to change a serpentine belt on a 1996 plymouth breeze. There is a cover in the way and we aren't sure how to get that off. It is the one on the top by the alternator.
How to change a belt on a 1996 plymouth breeze?
Those type of covers usually snap into position and could have a bolt or screw holding them on, plus if bolt or screw is used their positioned about centre so it holds the cover more firmly, to keep them from rattling and more balanced etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if you could get to a parts outlet then you could try calling around and seeing who offers a free print out and belts installation info and process for that vehicle.

How much should a serpentine belt replacement cost?

i have a 1999 lexus rx300 and it has a horrible squeaking sound, my auto friend said it was a rusty serpentine belt, i want to change it, is it worth it and how much should it cost? thanks for any answers
How much should a serpentine belt replacement cost?
I didn't know it was possible for a rubber belt to rust. Most serp belts if it's just one should run you under 100 bucks parts and labor.
How much should a serpentine belt replacement cost?
The belt's cost $18 - 22. %26amp; EZ to replace. Ask around and you'll find a buddy to help ya out. =^ )
had belt replaced on my impala cost was $45 for the belt and $22 for labor to replace it
first of all belts are made of rubber they don't rust. They crack and that is what makes it squeal. The shop where i work at for a 6 rib belt it costs 59.99 for the belt and labor. Other shops should be about the same. If you have a three rib it should cost a little less. some lexus still uses two to three belts. Make sure how many you have before you call any shop.

How to change a serpentine belt in a 1999 chevey malibu?

Look at the diagram under the hood for the correct routing of the belt. The way to remove the old one and install the new one is to relieve the pressure of the idler pulley. There will be a hex head in the center. More than likely a 14mm. or a square where a 3/8 ratchet can be inserted. Push down on the wrench or ratchet and this will relieve the tension and allow you to slip the belt off and the new one on.

I suspect it is coming from the exhaust intake area on the backside of the motor. Already changed serpentine belt. The noise is not there unless you press on the gas. It does it in neutral as well as driving.
I have a high pitched noise coming from the engine area of my 2003 Saturn L200. Can anyone give any ideas?
I don't think it has anything to do with your exhaust unless it has developed an air leak that sounds like a high pitched squeal. It's not very likely that is the culprit. Noises like this can be very hard to pinpoint. BUT... High pitched noises are usually related to a bearing that has become dry from wear and is getting close to overheating. Many engine parts that must rotate to do their function have bearings. You may want to check the Alternator. They can commonly cause a high pitched noise when the bearing is going bad. Usually if you remove the belt after you have driven the car, you hear the noise and the engine is still hot you can spin the pulley with your fingers and you will be able to feel that it's not moving easily. If it feels gritty when you turn it and it makes any audible noise you have found your problem. Good luck.

I had my belt changed and now my steering wheel is really hard to turn I went to work today and could not even get my car in the spot b/c it was so hard to turn and its squeeking so loud when I start the car this is the second belt that was changed it happened the next day after the belt was change ......now hes telline me oh it could be the pully am I being jerked around? I dont understand how that could have happen as soon as he changes the belt? what could be wrong what should I do
Serpentine belt changed now Im having problems?
if the belt which was replaced is the correct size %26amp; not too large(loose), then there is a very high probability that the tensioner assembly is bad. there is a spring within the assembly which many times, if going bad, will not bounce back to the proper tension adjustment. this almost always occurs after moving the tensioner in order to change a belt.

Serpentine belt changed now Im having problems?
Sounds like belt is slipping. Might need a new tensioner.
Sounds like the powersteering belt is way loose if its ruining belts the pulley may be bent or have damage to it!!
sounds like to me the wrong belt was used to replace the old one. New belt being to long will cause it to slip and that is why it is hard to trun
could be what was bad to start with the pulley that tightens the belt they do go bad many replace them when they replace belt cost like 30 bucks for my car but if its squealing belts not going to last long if its not bad already
If Man had a Special tool to bring Tensioner to have slack for Removal--On the other hand if He didn't: He had to force it on and

    in my opinion Power Steering Pump Bearings were damaged;
I think you are being jerked around. He put the new belt on and it is not tight. That is either because he did not tighten it, it is too large and therefore can't be tightened enough or the tensioner just happened to go bad when he replaced the belt (oh please--makes me gag).

You had better take a good look at it and see what is in the way. I have changed a belt on a Suzuki Aerio - they are not the same necessarily - but you may have to remove an engine mount support to get to it. in that event you need a floor jack to raise the engine off the mount. then you have to rotate the tensioner back and hold it so you can get the old belt off. (assuming it is spring loaded). If you don't have a floor jack and a pretty complete set of tools - better not attempt it. Getting the motor mount re-attached and lined up is pretty tricky.

    Serpentine Belt 2000 Grand Caravan?

How do I change a serpentine belt on the 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan.
    Serpentine Belt 2000 Grand Caravan?
release the tensioner and pull the belt off and then follow your routing schematic under the hood or in your owners manual and route it on the pulleys and release tensioner again and when you have the belt all routed release the tensioner against the belt and your done.
    Serpentine Belt 2000 Grand Caravan?
go to autozone and rent a serpentine belt tool, they will charge you about 20 and use that to move the tensioner and take the exsisting belt off and follow the diagram under your hood to put the new one on.
not that hard. on the rad brace or hood you should see the belt routing diagram. get a longer wrench of proper size (no crescents) and relieve the tensioner. slide the belt off. don't cut it as this allows you to see any obstructions to removal. reinstall to diagram and drive on.

How do I release the tensioner for the serpentine belt on a jeep?

2001 Jeep Wrangler with 4.0 liter engine. We have checked the New repair manual and it explains how to change the belt, but gives no info on releasing the tensioner. The tool that auto-zone says to use doesn't seem to have a way of connecting to do the trick....any ideas?
How do I release the tensioner for the serpentine belt on a jeep?
4.0 liter probably doesnt have a belt tensioner. Most 4 liter dodge engines you have to loosen the idler pully and then the screw on top of the idler pully screws the idler down when you loosen it. I could be wrong but I know that most 4 liters i have done are this way no tensioner just an idler pully that slides down when you loosen it. If it does have a tensioner then you should be able to use a 1/4 in ratchet. Insert into the hole on the end of the tensioner and pull back. I wrote to someone before about how to change a belt on a jeep. This is what I said.

not that easy there is no tensioner on a 4.0 liter. First you need a 15mm socket. There is a idler pully on the drivers side of engine in front of teh power steering pump. Loosen the bolt in the center of the pully. Do not take all the way out just loosen a few turns. Then once you have the idler loose you need a 13mm socket and extension. Look down on the back side of the idler kind of on top. THere is a bolt that is about 4 inches long that goes down through the back of the pully. Loosen that bolt and the idler pully will slide down taking tensioin off the belt. Do this until you fel the belt is loose enough to remove. Once you have the belt off put new belt back on follow the diagram on the sticker under the hood. Follow the steps in reverse order to tighten. First tighten the bolt until the belt can be twisted about 1/4 to 1/2 side to side. once the belt is tight enough go ahead and tighten the nut on the idler pully and your done. Before you start it is helpfull to look at the bolt on the back and look where the threads are this helps you to get correct tension. also make sure you have the sticker for the diagram under the hood before you start. If you sont make sure you draw the belt or get one. It can be a pain to put back if you have no diagram. Well sorry so long but wanted to be specific. Good luck.
How do I release the tensioner for the serpentine belt on a jeep?
    Like an OREO cookie;

    %26quot;Well to do it, you unscrew it!%26quot;

It is not an automatic (spring loaded) tensioner. There is a nut in the center of the idler pulley. Loosen that nut about 2 turns, then there is a lond bolt on the top side of the pulley bracket that you unscrew to allow the pulley to slide. Adjust the tension on the new belt by tightening this bolt, then tighten the center nut.

99 ford taurus 3.0 sohc w/ac...serpentine belt keeps breaking after changing witha new one...any suggestions?
Replace the belt tensioner, not just the pully. Maybe the waterpump, it might be siezed intermittenly. Really any accessory running on the belt can cause it. you could just run it with the hood up and listen for broken bearings. Its most likely the tensioner.
99 ford taurus 3.0 sohc w/ac...serpentine belt keeps breaking after changing witha new one...any suggestions?
Check the tension, if it's too tight it can break.

Also check the pulley alignment, if it's off a little the belt can run onto the edge and get cut .
    LOOK for a bad pulley

take off the belt then feel all of the pulley wheels for sharp edges

next make sure that the belt is not binding on any thing.

Need a diagram of a Serpentine belt change?

For a 2003 toyota echo we are having difficulty figuring out which bolts to loosen to release tention

all answers welcome thanks in advance
Need a diagram of a Serpentine belt change?
You shouldn't have to loosen any bolts. There's a belt tension pulley that has a bolt in the center. You put the wrench on the bolt just as a handle. Its spring loaded then try turning the wrench clockwise like your trying to tighten it the pulley should turn and release all tension.Put it back the same way.The pulley I'm talking about is usually smooth and runs against the back side of the belt not the serpentine side.
Need a diagram of a Serpentine belt change?
there are no bolts to loosen you have to unload the tensioner it is the pulley that does not drive a componet, rent or borrow one from a parts house also they may give you some instructions otherwise get abook or have someone qualified to do it

I am changing a serpentine belt on a 2000 Chrysler Concorde. I have the AC belt on I cant find out how to get the front MAIN belt on does anyone know if that idler pulley moves? I cant see any slots where it would slide. and there is no spring loaded pulley. Anything is appreciated
2000 chrysler concorde 2.7L serpentine belt?
If I remember correctly, the idler does move but you access the adjuster bolt from underneath the car? Loosen the center nut on the pulley, then turn the adjuster bolt to move the pulley. Put the belt on, then turn the adjuster bolt to tighten the tension, and tighten the center nut on the pulley to hold it in place. Yes, you do have a seperate belt for AC, so don't think you are looney. That car has a V-belt to the AC, and a Serp belt for everything else.
2000 chrysler concorde 2.7L serpentine belt?
get a repair manual to show you.
Truthfully, it probably wont matter much because the timing chain will come off of the passenger side and destroy the motor, and the belt will now become the least of your problems. The 2.7 litre engine is...ummm... junk. Sell it now if it still runs.
ok a seroentine belts drives everything so you do not have a seprate ac belt if you look on the raid support there will be a picture on how the belt goes on aslo go to your local auto parts store like autozopne and they will show you and yes there is a spring loaded tensor
On all 3.2/3.5 and 2.7 the idler is adjustable-loosen the locknut, then turn the adjuster bolt until proper tension is achieved, then retighten the locknut.

the locknut is on the tensioner the adjuster bolt is right behind the tensioner on the left hand side. Good luck!

How do i change serpentine belt on a 3.3LT v-6 motor?

actually a serpentine belt has its own tensioner. if you had a v-groove belt then you would loosen the alternator. you should see a pulley on a short spring loaded arm that you can get a Rather or end wrench on. the tensioner is gonna have a pretty tight spring in it, so you'll have to twist it away from the belt with a good amount of force to slack the belt enough to pop over and off of the alternator pulley (i say pull it off the alternator because that is typically the smallest pulley, but if you have a smaller idler pulley you could remove it there as well). if you forget the route that the belt was in originally, there should be a belt routing diagram somewhere under the hood, usually on the front right above the radiator.

Serpentine belt and Timing belt of 1998 Toyota corolla LE?

Following questions are regarding 1998 Toyota corolla LE model.

    1. Service center with Toyota dealer recommends me to change the serpentine belt and he quotes $135 for it. When I contacted another service center, they said that there were three kind of serpentine belts (one for air conditioning and others for something else) and questioned which one needs to be replaced. But, my toyota dealer says there is only one serpentine belt. Does anyone know how many serpentine belts found in 1998 Toyota corolla LE model? If more than one kind, any idea which one the toyota dealer refers to?

    2. Toyota dealer recommends me to change Timing belt and quotes $350 for it. When I contacted other service center, they said there was no timing belt in 1998 Toyota corolla LE, but it had Timing chain and it didn't have to be replaced in the lifetime of the car. Who is correct?

    Thanks.
Serpentine belt and Timing belt of 1998 Toyota corolla LE?
A 98 Corolla has a timing chain and a serpentine belt. The belt usually lasts around 60,000 miles or so, although I have had to change them at about 45K at times. Basically, just look at the grooved side of the belt where it goes around one of theh pulleys. If it has cracks running across any of the ribs in the belt, it is time to change it. If not, unless it is very noisy it will go for a while longer. The timing chain is what I call the %26quot;new generation%26quot; of chains (which may date me!). Those chains last roughly forever. It will begin to make a rattling noise especially on start up before it needs to be relaced. It is true that if they break it will cause havok in your engine, but I have seen only one of that style break in 15 years, and they use that style now in Previas, Tacomas, Celicas, Corollas, Tundras, 4Runners, Camrys, and anything else with a chain in it, so I wouldn't worry about it.

    Hope this helps. God Bless!
Serpentine belt and Timing belt of 1998 Toyota corolla LE?
it has a serpentine belt.30.35+tax,or w/out a.c.28.25.the1.8engine is equipped w/a timing chain, and yes they do wear out eventually.so,be careful who you take it to.timing chains take alot of miles to wear enough to warrant adjustment/replacement.
It is time to change it, it is a 1998 car so it is more then 10 years old. More then likely, it has about 200,000 miles on it. I seem to remember it is every 100,000 miles it needs to be replaced. As for the timing belt/chain, if it snaps it can SERIOUSLY screw up ur engine, so it might be time to change it too.
Your Toyota stealership is just that.. a %26quot;stealership!!%26quot; 1998 Corollas don't have a timing belt- they have a maintenance-free timing chain. In fact, all Corollas after 1997 have the timing CHAIN. I should know. I used to own a 1999 LE- which is the same car. Go elsewhere for service.

I have found the tension pulley -but when I loosen bolt nothing happens-what next?
How do I change the serpentine belt on a 94 GMC sonoma????
You push on the tension pulley, don't have to loosen the bolt, all that bolt does is hold the pulley on. Look in the front of the panels under the hood for the map or the routing of the belt. It is pretty simple to do. Do not try and force the belt on with a screwdriver, you will ruin the belt and they are not cheap.
How do I change the serpentine belt on a 94 GMC sonoma????
Visit www.mygmlink.com You need to pull release tension on the pulley and lift the belt off.
    you dont loosen it!

most tension pulleys have small squares cut out of them for the ratchet to fit in to then you push or pull on it to release pressure then slide the belt off.

its in plain site or behind it.

its got a spring inside that keeps tension on the belt, you relieve it with a ratchet. good luck

Just like %26quot;E-Rock%26quot; said. Its not that hard to do. I ended up replacing the entire cooling system in my Jeep last summer and I ended up taking that belt off and on numerous times.

Bring it to the dealer or a mechanic. That's a job you really don't want to screw up.
How to change a serpentine belt on a 2000 VW bettle?
Before you begin, take some pictures or make a drawing of how the belt is attached. This will save you a lot of time when putting the new belt on.

First disconnect the air intake boot and vacuum line off the intake. Then take an adjustable wrench (crescent) and on the tensioner there is a tab sticking straight up place wrench on this and pull back to release belt tension but don't allow it to slipoff the tab. Remove belt (thats the easy part) I found if you have a helping hand it is much easier for the install. Put the belt around all the upper pullys first. Have your helper pull the tensioner back and slip the belt on the bottom pully last i mean the power steering pully the one on the bottom closest to the front of the car. reinstall hoses. Good Luck

How do i change the serpentine belt?

i need step by step instructions on how to change the serpentine belt on a 91 honda accord. i have no idea of how to do it and the mechanic is tryin to charge me 50 dollars which i dont have please help
How do i change the serpentine belt?
I don't know why everyone (well, except JonnyBoy) thinks your '91 Accord has a Serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner, because it doesn't.

    Alternator

    1. Loosen the alternator mounting nut/bolt and through-bolts.

    2. Turn the adjusting nut until the proper belt tension is reached. Recheck the tension and readjust as required.

    3. Tighten the mounting nut/bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and the through-bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).

    4. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes. Recheck the belt tension and readjust as required.

    Power Steering

    1. Loosen the pump through-bolt and nut.

    2. Turn the adjusting bolt until the desired tension is reached.

    3. Tighten the through-bolt to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm) and the nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm).

    4. Start the engine and turn the wheel lock-to-lock several times. Recheck the belt tension and readjust as required.

btw, if that $50 price includes good quality belts, I'd recommend you have them do it, because the 2 belts alone run over $40 with tax.
How do i change the serpentine belt?
Even if the $50 doesn't include the belts, it is CHEAP for a mechanic.

$50 bucks shouldn't be too much to spare. If you've never changed a timing belt I wouldn't try it yourself. If you line a tooth or two up wrong, it could result in incorrect valve timing causing your valves to ram into your pistons! So by doing it yourself, your risking ruining your engine for good.
Its easy find the tensioner ? uh... i'm not sure were its located but there is usually a nut looking deal that you need a ratchet to turn this holds the belt on the pullys with tension hens the word tensioner pully if you look at the pully's you will notice a wheel that is just there and looks like it has no purpose well anyway you push on it real hard and it should move not loosen then you take your old one off make sure to look very carefully to see how the belt loops around all the pullys there is always a guide under the hood on a sticker that shows you the route of the belt so anyway put the new one in place and you will have to put force on the tensioner pully again to give you room to finish the last of the routing release tension and there you go your all done it's really not that hard but much easier if you have seen it done before if you cant find the location of the tensioner go to an auto parts store and ask if they can show you were it is they are usually pretty helpfull with info. like that
I have no idea where the first person pulled his answer from but it isn't even close! You asked how to change a serpentine belt which has nothing to do with a timing belt which turns the camshaft.

The problem is without a serpentine belt and the tools to do the work $50.00 isn't a bad deal, particularly when the belt costs between $30.- $35.00.
50 bucks isn't bad. First off you have to release tension on the system (i.e. at the tensioner pulley bracket)...it's different on some cars. Some actually can be released pushing on the bracket flare with simple open end wrench (mainly modern gm), others require (or makes it easier to do) a serpentine %26quot;bar%26quot; which costs around 30 bucks. You release the tension with one hand and pull the belt off the tensioner with the other hand. Then you thread the new serpentine over all the pulleys in the factory orientation (again...different on different cars) and use the serpentine bar again to release the tension and pull the belt over the tensioner. Visually check to make sure it's on the grooves properly and voila...you're done.

The other way is to remove the alternator or possibly the condenser to release the tension which is stupid and takes longer but works. Then route the belt, then put the belt on the removed part's pulley and bolt it in.

I take no responsibility for anything you do and mess up. I suggest either sucking it up and go to the shop and pay for it...or if the belt isn't shredded/broken...run with it until it breaks (check it every time you drive it). When it breaks your water pump won't work neither will your alternator and condenser.

[edit: if no automatic tensioner...you shouldn't touch it...]

  • What's the easiest way to keep the tensioner wheel released on a 96 Blazer so I can change the serpentine belt

Auto Manufacturers make a tool for that, I did a few useing a Tire Iron then eventually made a Universal tool.

Most every Timing Shop. Tune Up place has them, the Dealer definatley has the, and sometimes you can use a loaner from Auto-Zone,Pep-boys,whatever.

Is a tuff job without that tool, but not impossible by any means.
What's the easiest way to keep the tensioner wheel released on a 96 Blazer so I can change the serpentine belt
put a wrench or ratchet right on the bolt that holds the idler pulley to the end of the tensioner arm in a manner that gives you leverage to move the arm (it's a 15 mm bolt I think) I believe that it's left hand threads so as you pull your wrench it will move the arm and not loosen the bolt that holds on the pulley.

Route the belt around everything else first then as you bring it up alongside the pulley wheel pull back on your wrench to move the idler arm back and slip the belt over it.
What's the easiest way to keep the tensioner wheel released on a 96 Blazer so I can change the serpentine belt
    cant

you pull it back as you put the belt over last pully and let it go
Should be a tool available to release the tension...check parts retail chains...some will loan tools for use on their property or rent them for take-home use...renting small specialty tools is pretty cheap for occasional use
other than just holding it by yourself you dont. You just move it enough to get the belt off then release it put new belt on and pull back untill it fits.

How do I change the serpentine belt on my 01 dodge intrepid?

When inspecting the belt, if it appears to be glazed (shiny), show cuts, cracks or other deterioration on either side or on the edges, has chunks missing from it, or is merely noisy鈥攊t has to be changed. It's helpful if you can determine the cause of a particular problem鈥攆rom normal wear to damage鈥攕o you can be assured that the replacement belt will last the full duration of its service life.

Before taking off the belt, check your service manual for any helpful tips that apply to your specific vehicle. One caution: as belt tensioners are sprung very tightly (some tighter than others), any %26quot;slips%26quot; involving the wrench used to loosen belt tension can cause serious personal injury, as well as damage to the surrounding area under the hood.

Ideally you should use the special service tool designed for belt-tension removal (via the tensioner). Be aware of where the tool will be positioned when tension is removed and make sure the tensioner is resting on its internal %26quot;stop.%26quot; Obviously, if the tool contacts another component before the tensioner stop is contacted, tension is not completely released and the tool will %26quot;jam%26quot; if left to rest in that position. The possibility of the tool slipping off of the tensioner is high, and injury will likely result.

Once tension is properly released, it's time to remove the belt. Start removal from the most easily accessed and largest pulley having the least amount of belt contact, if possible (sometimes this is the tensioner, sometimes not). Usually, it's just a matter of pulling the belt clear of the other pulleys and right out of the engine bay. However, sometimes engine mounts or other components such as splash shields first need to be removed. Once the belt is out, here are a few other components to inspect:

%26gt; Coolant pump for leakage (will cause belt noise if coolant gets on belt) or bad bearing

%26gt; Fan Clutch (if equipped) for fluid leakage

%26gt; Fan for damage (especially a problem with plastic fans)

%26gt; Tensioner unit for noisy pulley bearing or wear on tensioner mechanism

%26gt; Idler pulley(s) for noisy bearing or irregularly worn belt contact area (especially a problem on plastic pulleys)

%26gt; Any under hood component that is making contact with or is close to the belt, tensioner, or any pulleys

%26gt; Any other source of fluid leakage onto the belt

With all of that correct, the belt can now be installed. Since all replacement belts are not created equal, get the best quality belt possible. The same cautions highlighted earlier should be observed on reinstallation. Be patient. Route the belt in reverse order of removal, keeping especially vigilant about making sure that the belt ribs are set correctly in the pulley grooves, and the back of the belt is squarely contacting the tensioner and idler pulley(s), before starting the engine.

If applicable, note the tensioner position %26quot;scale%26quot; (its arrow should be somewhere between the two lines on the other half of the tensioner, preferably on the %26quot;tight%26quot; side). If it's way off, the belt may be incorrect.

    phew...hope that helps.

I'm changing the altenator on my 1994 jeep cherokee and I need to know how to loosen the serpentine belt?

Do we have a 5.2, 5.9 or 4.0? Makes a difference. If it is a 4.0, there is a pulley with a jack screw just below the power steering pump. If it is V-8, I THINK that the release is to loosen the power steering pump, but I'm not all that sure.

Ok get a big pair of cutter-pliers, and place them strategically around the serpentine belt. Squeeze really hard, and itll loosen up very quickly! And make sure your blinker fluid in the discombobulator's reservoir is full. If its not, the battery will reverse polarity and smoke the instrument panel!

um i don't know what you are talking about
That's easy, get yourself a Chilton Book for your jeep. It tells you everything for repairs.
i have a 93, there is a slip linkage on the altinator that you have to loosen, there isn't an idler pulley like there should be. just loosen the bolts on the altinator and slide it down the belt will be loose.
    easily
there is a small pully on the bottom of the belt...use a long pry bar or something to pry the pully up...thats how you loosin it.

Well your first mistake was going to Jiffy Lube. But that is another story.

First take it back and tell them what you mell. It is possable that thy forgot to put something back thy took off.

It soundds like the belt is eather the wrong one and it is rubbing on the block.
sounds like the %26quot;mechanic%26quot; sat on your seat with his greasy clothes and got some on your seat. It has a unique smell, kind of like wheel bearing grease mixed with gas. Stick your nose on your seat and see if that's it.
Take it back to Rippy Lube and make the manager have a whiff of what you're smelling. And never let those guys work on your car again. Oil change specialists are the lowest of entry-level mechanic jobs out there. Next step is a brake and muffler shop, and after that mechanics will either work for themselves or sign up with a dealership.

I used to work summers as a detailer at a local honda dealership, and we would see at least one car every month or so come in with a blown engine due to a Lube center that screwed up a simple oil change.

1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Serpentine Belt?
Here is the guide I use.

First draw a diagram of the pulley locations and the routing of the belt.

Take off the old belt - DO NOT CUT IT OFF - if you've purchased the wrong new belt your going to need the old one; aren't you?

There is a belt tensioner pulley in there. It can be retracted using a 3/8 or 1/2'' ratchet handle. Just the handle - no socket required - there should be a square hole on the pulley bracket that the handle will fit into. This bracket has a fairly strong spring in it so be carefull.

General rule of thumb. Grooved pulleys receive the grooved side of the belt and smooth pulleys have the smooth side of the belt run over them. Don't screw this up or you will have accessories running backwards and that not a good thing.

It doesn't have a timing belt. It uses a chain which is not a scheduled replacement item.

It does use a serpentine belt for the alternator, AC and pumps. The belt costs around 40 to 50 bucks, and installation would be about the same.

How do you change a serpentine belt on a '01 Jetta 1.8t?
Your belt is two sided and requires just simple serpentine

installation tool available at your local parts store or sears...
I have a '02 Jetta with the 2.0 liter, if its laid out anything like mine you will need a 15mm open-end wrench, and a really stiff piece of wire (for this I used a small allen key). On top of the belt tensioner is a square protrusion, slip the open-end wrench on it to swing the tensioner, and release the tension of the belt. There is a small hole in the tensioner arm, and one in the tensioner housing, turn the tensioner with the wrench until these two holes line up, then insert the wire through the holes to lock the tensioner in place. Remove the belt, be sure to note how the belt is routed, draw a diagram if necessary. Put the new belt on, swing the tensioner a little bit to remove the wire, then slowly let the tensioner apply tension to the belt. After the belt is installed, give the engine a few quick cranks to make certain the belt is seated, when everything looks good, start the engine.

How do i change serpentine belt on 99 montero sport?

I do not know specifically for your car, but in general one of the pulleys will pivot. Attach socket wrench to the bolt on that pulley and turn it to untension the belt. Note: you may need to turn the wrench the opposite direction then you expect to untension.

Put on new belt following the belt diagram which should be on the hood. The diagram may also indicate which pulley pivots.
How do i change serpentine belt on 99 montero sport?
The pulley that pivots is called the belt tensioner and it is spring loaded with a really strong spring. Most belt tensioners have a square hole in the swing arm of the tensioner that uses a 3/8 inch flex handle or ratchet. If you don't want to buy a flex handle and none of your friends has one you can rent one.

That isn't a very fun job. I've done it dozens of times and it never seems to get easier. Is it a 3.0 or 3.3 engine? Either way it's no fun. Take it to a shop they will do it for $20 or less.

i own a repair shop and on either engine this isn't too bad of a job ,there's a diagram of how it goes on ,out on the front of it,if you,ll look at that, it shows how its done, its impossible to explain it on here though ,but if you,ll follow that diagram it will show you how its done, good luck with it hope this helps.

How release tension on serpentine belt 1998 olds 88?

I need to change the serpentine belt on olds 88, with 8500 series engine, 1998
How release tension on serpentine belt 1998 olds 88?
the belt tensioner is bolted to the engine and there should be a square hole in it at the top to use a 3/8%26quot; drive ratchet into the square hole to pry it over so it loosens the tension on the belt, you might have to get a 2 or 3' piece of pipe that will go over the ratchet handle for extra leverage.
How release tension on serpentine belt 1998 olds 88?
there should be a belt tensioner mounted in line with the other pullys on the engine. it might only be about 3 inches in diameter and probably black. your best bet would be to call your local auto parts store and ask them. all it should take is to put a ratchet on the end bolt with the right sized socket and turn it the opposite way that it is putting tension on the belt.

Is there a website or other reference that tells step by step how to change a serpentine belt on a 2003 Camry?

Follow the diagram under the hood. And use a ratchet to pry the tensioner to give enough slack in the belt to get it off ans again to get it back on. On some cars you need to remove the front tire to reach all of the pulleys.

How often do i need to change the timing belt and serpentine belt on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica?

It currently has 43000 miles and I bought it used in May of this year.
How often do i need to change the timing belt and serpentine belt on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica?
dealer recommendations are 50,000 for both belts serpentine you can get away with timing belt you always want to do before it breaks (around fifty thousand miles or so ) because if it brakes you are looking at bent valves and head problems which would be alot more expensive than changing the belt as a preventative maintenance item
How often do i need to change the timing belt and serpentine belt on a 2004 Chrysler Pacifica?
The serpentine belt runs power steering air conditioner compressor water pump and probably some thing els I'm forgeting. It should be inspected every time you change the oil. If it looks cracked it should be replaced. With 43000 miles I would replace the belt. The timing belt is another story. It should last a very long time. At least 100,000 miles. If you are not a mechanic I don't recomend doing this your self. But most manufactuers do not recomend a timing belt change untill after 100,000 miles.

  • How do you change serpentine belt on 97 f-150?

There is a tensioner that keeps the belt tight. Using the right size wrench, turn the tensioner to release the pressure on the belt with one hand, and slid it out with the other. Note how it goes otherwise, there is a white tag on the radiator support that shows you how to install it.

    Good luck!
How do you change serpentine belt on 97 f-150?
I follow the directions in my manual.

    ADDED:

There is a spring loaded tensioner and pulley that needs to be pulled away from the belt with a 1/2%26quot; breaker bar to allow the belt to be slipped off the pulleys.

    Nothing needs to be removed.
How do you change serpentine belt on 97 f-150?
You will need a tool to release the tension on the tensioner pulley and follow the belt routing diagram that you see when opening the hood..... if you have not done this before or did not aquire the proper tool for the job you will have difficulty in completing your task...

How to change the serpentine belt on a 1997 buick skylark?

there will be one pulley that will loosen up and allow you slack to take off the old one and in stall the new one. usually it is the alternator. there should be a picture under the hood to show you how to route the new belt. then tighten the belt by tighentening the slack on the alternator ( if it is the pivot pulley) and using a pry bar or a bar of some sort tighten the belt up and while holding pressure tighten up the bolts on the alternator. don't over tighten the belt or you ll be replacing a pulley in a few weeks.
How to change the serpentine belt on a 1997 buick skylark?
First you need to buy a serpentine tension release tool. A standard wrench will not work well. Once you have the tension released from the belt it will slip off of the pulleys. There is a diagram of the belt installation under the hood. Follow these instructions to install the new belt.
How to change the serpentine belt on a 1997 buick skylark?
there should be a belt tensioner, you should be able to pull up on the belt and see it move, most of the time there will be a 3/8 square that you can put a ratchet in, push the direction that will release the tension, when installing the new belt i find it easier to put the belt over the alternator last because you'll have to do it while pushing the tensioner
