How to change serpentine belt 98 Corolla?

Hello,

I need to charge the serpentine belt on my wife鈥檚 corolla; it鈥檚 my first time working on the car. I see 2 pulleys which might be the tension pulley. 1 pulley is flat on the outside with no nut on it. The other pulley has a bolt on it but it looks alike a hex key goes on it or I鈥檓 I looking at the wrong pulleys. Please give me some advise I don鈥檛 want to start messing with the wrong pulleys..|||Hi, The best thing to do is push on the long side of the belt a look to see what moves. Some cars have square holes to put a breaker bar on, some just have flats to put a wrench on. Either way, draw a diagram of the belt routing and keep it in the car, just in case it breaks sometime. The rule is the smooth pulleys ride on the back of the belt, the grooved pulleys the front, or inside of the belt. You can do it..Geo|||You should be able to tell which pulley will move and remove tension just by looking at it. I know I had a Honda where I had to loosen the alternator because it actually put tension on the belt. Your best option if you don%26#039;t know much about this particular car is to invest in a a good repair manual for it. Honda%26#039;s and Toyota%26#039;s often have illogical repair steps.

I have a 2001 Saturn L Series. Does anyone know when you should change a serpentine belt?

When I bought the car it had 60,000 miles on it. Should I start changing everything?|||you should start doing maintenance items and a belt would be one of those items.

belt should have been changed at 36,000 just by maintenance intervals..

so 60,000 yes it should be changed

you will also want to do these things if not already done:

plugs and wires

engine flush at next oil change

fuel filter

trans service

coolant flush

brake fluid flush

these items are based on regular maintenance intervals|||When you see small cracks in it.|||The Saturn folks will tell you to replace it every 60k. Personally, I replace stuff when it breaks. I have 170k on my 2001 Saturn S Series... no problems.

Do this - take a look at the belt a couple of different times (it%26#039;ll stop in different places each time). How does it look? Frayed, cracked? If so, replace it... if not, don%26#039;t

When do you change Serpentine Belt?

how long should the Serpentine Belt last in a car?? I have a Chrysler LHS 94 and i was told it is time to change it? should i ASAP or are they just getting $$$ from a female.. it is cracked on the inside i have seen it|||biggest scam going. Take it from me, I walked off the service floor seven years ago and became an auto teacher because of these things. Serpentines can last up to ten years an an average car. When looking at the belt on the ribbed side, you need to replace it when there are two sections of ribbing missing within two inches from each other. If there is a small(1/2) piece missing from 1 rib, the belt is fine. The out(smooth)side of the belt will show signs of being worn out by turning a gray colour and threads are coming out around the edges. A multitude of tiny cracks on the inside is very normal because these belts are manufactured in a continuous strip, then they are cut to size and the ends bonded together. When you take something that was flat and curve it, say around a half dozen round pulleys of an engine, the inner circumference of the belt is smaller than the outer, causing the ribs to slightly fold over each other. After awhile, the ribs are folded and unfolded so often that they crack. I think physics has an explanation for this phenomena of rubber cracking like it does, as conservation of energy. If the belt is stretched, there is a wear indicator on every tensioner pulley. The movable arm piece of the pulley has a pointer that lies between two marks on the non movable part. As long as the pointer is between the two, the belt is fine.|||When it get%26#039;s cracked like that it is a good idea to change it but you can do it yourself. There is a diagram, usually located on your fan shroud. All you need is a 3/8 in ratchet or a 15 millimeter wrench depending on what your tension wheel front center looks like. I%26#039;ve even had them where they were 9/16. A little help from someone is nice. But you can do it yourself. Some people don%26#039;t change them till they break.|||If it is cracked, also called dry rot, then yes it is time to change it! They are very low cost and sometimes can be done on your own, but sounds like you may not have the know how(no offense!) and its better to replace it now than later when you are stranded on the side of the road after it shreds to pieces and causes more damage! So i say buy the part and pay the mechanics labor only, most shops mark up parts and make their money there. Most mechanics work per the job not by the hour, so your looking at a 30 minute-1 1/2 hour job at the most, and most labor rates are anywhere from $40.00-$75.00 dollars per hour on the job.

Good luck!|||Cracks are not good, and I%26#039;ve also seen them run a long time with the cracks (dry rot). I will always change my belt at about 65 to75,000 mile mark. Just about all that I%26#039;ve seen have cracks due to the overwhelming heat they are exposed to, most of the people I tell just keep driving it. They will drive it till it brakes and now they have no water pump, power steering, alternator, or air conditioning, and on top of all this they are now calling a tow truck for a $65.00 job that could have saved them. I recommend like I said to change it every 65 to 75,000 mile whether it needed it or not. It will save you in the long run, plus the Little bitty hassle of WORRY|||if any part of the belt is missing id change it asap but if its cracked its ur choise who knows how long it will last could last 1 hr or 5 years if u dont drive out of town much it may b ok 4 now but if u plan on a trip id change it to be safe hope this helps good luck

How much would it cost to change a serpentine belt on a 1994 GMC Vandura?

When I start the van and let it warm up there is like a screeching sound and then when I drive it it normally takes a long time to switch into first gear and to get going..could this be the serpentine belt?|||Serp belt has nothing to do with trans shifting while screeching noise could come from it.

With noise, start with checking the belt tensioner arm - it should return without binding after being swung by hand (make sure the engine is not running when testing this!).

This is an extremely common gm (not only gm) problem - the tensioner arm gets corroded, and doesn%26#039;t provide sufficient belt tightening.

Trans - sounds like you have leaking internal seal(s), and only overhaul or replacement will take care of that. But first check fluid level!|||The screeching during start up could be a belt but I doubt it. Serpentine belts are good for a long time, plus have self adjusters. Look at the belt, if the ribs on the bottom are cracked and split, replace it. It is easy and any car guy friend should be able to do it. I%26#039;m more concerned you have a transmission problem. Have you checked the fluid? Let us know some details..|||Screeching could be caused by the belt of one of the bearings it is driving on. Kind of sounds like your trans is slipping or low on fluid. Get some diagnosis done on it.|||before overhauling transmition check fluid if bron and smells burnt change fluid and filter first this sometimes takes care of this cause filter gets plugged

How do I change the serpentine belt on my 1995 Ford Explorer?

I need to replace the serpentine belt on my Explorer but am on a seriously low budget. I%26#039;d like to save money by doing it myself. I%26#039;m fairly mechanically inclined, but I need someone to help explain to me how it works at least once. I%26#039;ve been unable to find the proper info for this on the web.

I would like to avoid going to the library and looking it up there if I could possibly get some help here on the net. Thanks!|||First go and buy a repair manual at a parts house, and see what it takes to do this. Can just look at it and see if you can do this. Also can go to the library and check out the book as well, thats alote less expensive. Some of these take special tools and might not be your cup of Tea.|||First take a paper and draw up a rough scetch of how the belt is routed. you need either a 1/2 inch breaker bar, or 1/2 wratchet.

you will see the square hole on the idler pulley. If it wont move pull and push untill it will. using the wratchet I recommend a pipe or cheater pipe on it for more leavarage. You are going to have to hold down the tension with one hand and slide the belt with the other hand.|||every thing the other guy said is right except for the size its a 3/8 drive ratchet not a 1/2 inch.|||look under the hood on the radiator support. there should be a diagram showing you how it goes on.

If you change the Serpentine belt on a 1997 olds cutlass and have to take off the motor mounts, will the motor?

If I change the Serpentine belt on a 1997 olds cutlass and have to take off the motor mounts, will the motor need a jack up under it?|||you dont need to take that mount off !!!!

remove the further most forward nut and stud (front of car...)

there is a spacer that will come out and then the belt will come right out.

it is tricky putting the spacer back in and you will need a female torx for the stud.

good luck |||Absolutely. Don%26#039;t ever take off a motor mount without holding up the engine. Make sure you have a swear jar and a case of beers handy when doing this one, btw. :-)|||yes and be very careful, there is a trick in doing that belt but its to complicated to explain.|||You do not have to take the motor mount all the way out, but you do have to disconnect it, and use a jack under the oil pan to raise or lower the motor slightly. You should use a wide, sturdy block of wood on top of the jack, as it is very easy to punch a hole in the Aluminum pans.

For a complete step-by-step procedure, with pictures, go here;

http://www.autozone.com/shopping/repairG鈥?/a>

then select Year, Make, Model, and Engine. Then click the links for %26quot;General Information And Maintenance%26quot;, %26quot;Routine Maintenance And Tune-up%26quot;, and %26quot;Belts%26quot;. You can click on the pictures to enlarge them.

I actually prefer to remove the bolts on the motor side, and lower the motor slightly, as opposed to the way they show here;

http://econtent.autozone.com:24991/znetr鈥?/a>

or, if you prefer, you could take the whole plate out of the way, and just support the motor where it is.

This method also works good if you don%26#039;t have a jack. You can just stack some blocks of wood under the oil pan, then lift the front end of the car a little bit by hand, and slip in one last piece of wood to support the motor slightly. Then do the under hood stuff, and take the blocks of wood out to finish tightening the nuts on to the studs, after the rest is all put back together.

I am changing the serpentine belt on my 2000 Ford Ranger...?

What size is the bolt head on the belt tensioner?

Is it Metric or English?

It is a tight space, should I use a socket or a open end wrench?

Thanks!|||Run to AutoZone and get the serpentine belt tool. You%26#039;ll have to pay a deposit, but you get all of it back. It has everything you need, like all the sizes it could be and a long bar to give you leverage. They can show you how to use it. It%26#039;s the easiest way. You can keep the tool as long as you need, then get a full refund.

hope this helps and you have an AutoZone or other parts store nearby.|||It usually is a 15mm bolt. Can try an open end wrench for the tight clearance, but will require a bit of muscle. Good luck.|||it is most likely 15 mm...use a box end wrench...and be sure to leave space for it to release.. not a difficult job if you have the correct tools|||you shouldnt have to remove the belt tensioner. It should be spring loaded. Usually use a socket wrench without a socket on it and push, it will remove the tension so you can remove the belt. Check for a sticker under the hood showing the belt routing, it may show you which way to push or pull the tensioner. You should also refer to it when putting on a new belt.|||you cant use a pry bar to push back on the tension er to release enough to get the belt off, put the new one on on all but the tension er and then just pry it back up and put the belt on. you don%26#039;t have to remove anything or worry about any metric/standard bolts.|||its 14mm use a socket and its in front top of engine.

Is it difficult for a fairly handy person to change the serpentine belt on a 1995 ford mustang.?

I am not nor do i claim to be a mechanic. I can do oil changes and spark plug changes. I lost my serpentine belt on the freeway yesterday pretty far from home and had to leave the car in a business park overnight....I am picking up a new belt today and would like to just put it in and drive the car home because towing it would cost a fortune.|||Changing the belt is simple. Release the tensioner and install the belt. But unless the belt just picked that moment to fly off, there is likely a reason it failed. Spin all your pulleys slowly, feeling and listening for noise or rough bearings. You may have another issue that caused the belt to come off, and will likely do it to the new belt as well.|||the schematic for the belt should be on a decal inside your engine bay. you would need a wrench to move the belt tensioner out of the way, but i%26#039;ve seen a single person install a serpentine belt before. if you can%26#039;t find the diagram... most auto parts stores should be able to show you one.|||you can change it pretty easy make sure you have a rachet that fits on wheel to tightenin front by the raditor|||Sometimes you just can%26#039;t seem to thread the new belt on without getting under the car to position the belt. If your car has that problem, you%26#039;ll need a couple of jack stands to put under the frame and suspension for safety when you crawl under the engine to position the belt. You%26#039;ll also need a diagram of how the belt threads around all the pulleys. You also need a 1/2 inch drive socket wrench or breaker bar to release the tension on the belt tensioner.|||It%26#039;s a piece of cake. Make sure that you draw or take note of EXACTLY how the belt is routed. Some cars have this info on the radiator core support, but not all.

Use a 1/2%26quot; Breaker Bar (either it will have a 1/2%26quot; square hole in the tensioner bracket, or you will need a socket to fit the pully bolt.) to rotate the tensioner up, loosening the belt. Slip it off the alternator pulley, and release the tensioner. Remove the belt the rest of the way.

Take the new belt and start at the bottom, loop it under the crank pulley, then start routing it around the rest. When you get all but the alternator pully routed, use the breaker bar to raise the tensioner back up and slip the belt onto the alternator. Double check that the belt is properly seated on every single pully prior to starting the engine. It is common for people to have the belt hanging off by one groove. When the engine is started, the edge of the pully will slice the part hanging over, ruining the belt.

Some auto parts will also print out the belt routing for you.

Check the part number of the new belt vs. the old one to ensure it is correct prior to installing the new one, or better yet, take the old one with you and have it matched.|||The hardest part is figuring out how to route the new belt. Hopefully you have a picture in your hand book to show you the correct way it goes on. Otherwise, just install your new belt and use a 15 mm wrench in a clockwise direction to loosen the tensioner and slip the belt under the tensioner .Then slack off the wrench and put it back in your toolbox. Your finished except make sure that the belt is sitting correctly in all of the pulleys. I wish you luck.|||It helps a ton to have an actual serpentine belt tool to pull the tentioner out of the way while sliding the new belt on. Ant auto parts store has these. There very economical if you know the nut size in the center of the tentioner.

The one I have is made by performance tool part # W8410. It%26#039;s two feet long 3/16 thick by an inch and a half wide. On the business end there%26#039;s a welded on 3/8 drive square for any size millimeter shallow socket you may need. It comes with three sockets and four 3/8 crows feet open end wrenches. If you have clearance a regular socket wrench will work with a length of pipe on the end. Be careful, regular wrenches can swat you in the face the angularity isn%26#039;t just right.|||Check the bearings on the alternator and idler pulley before installing the belt. On the idler arm there should be a 1/2%26quot; square hole, use a breaker bar or ratchet to move the arm for installing the belt.

How to change serpentine belt on 2002 celica gts?

Yeah my sis left me her car. And i want to change to belt because it is really cracked. So how do you release the tension on these dang cars so i can remove it and put the new belt in.|||Usually there is either a square hole for a 3/8 drive rathchet, or a 15 mm both head on the tensioner. Use whichever tool is appropriate to pull the tensioner back. sometimes you need to use a piece of pipe as a cheater bar for extra leverage.

How do you change the serpentine belt on a 1998 Honda Accord?

It%26#039;s an LX 4cyl. Its actually had 2 belts next to each other that I%26#039;m looking to replace. I do not see a tensioner so do I just remove the Alternator pulley to replace or what?|||I think on this car the Alternator tensions one of the belts and the Power steering pump tensions the other one. You do not remove the pulleys, you need to loosen(do not remove) like 2 or 3 bolts on the ps pump and then the pump should slide and the belt should come off. Same story with the alt...but im sure that only has two bolts....one of them is under the alt and you can reach it easier from underneath. Good luck!|||That engine doesn%26#039;t have tensioners instead it has brackets that are slotted. All you need to do is loosen (dont remove) the bolts. Probably a 12mm and move the alternator and or power steering pump. This will take the tension off the belt so you can remove it.|||the one on the left

What steps do I take to change serpentine belt on 2003 Nissan Murano?

take a photo of the way it is routed, this will help you on installation, get a long handled wrinch, and de-tension the tensioner, pull the belt off the pulleys, walk it around the fan shroud and out the bottom, install is reverse of removal, ensure that the belt is seated properly on all the pulleys before starting the car at the end. alternatively jiffy lube does free install with belt purchase.|||real easy

Is it difficult to change a serpentine belt on an 07 nissan altima? Is this something that I can do myself?

I don%26#039;t know a lot about cars, but have done some things such as changing brakes. I%26#039;m wondering if the belt is more difficult to get to than it is to change.|||make sure you have the right tools to do it. some cars use just a plain wrench and some use a belt tool. an autoparts store can tell you if you need one or not|||You should be able to do it. Which engine?|||if you can change brakes you can certainly change a belt.|||Here is a video on the 2005, should be about the same.. just copy and paste this link to see...

Serpentine and Timing belts of 1998 Toyota corolla LE?

Following questions are regarding 1998 Toyota corolla LE model.

1. Service center with Toyota dealer recommends me to change the serpentine belt and he quotes $135 for it. When I contacted another service center, they said that there were three kind of serpentine belts (one for air conditioning and others for something else) and questioned which one needs to be replaced. But, my toyota dealer says there is only one serpentine belt. Does anyone know how many serpentine belts found in 1998 Toyota corolla LE model? If more than one kind, any idea which one the toyota dealer refers to?

2. Toyota dealer recommends me to change Timing belt and quotes $350 for it. When I contacted other service center, they said there was no timing belt in 1998 Toyota corolla LE, but it had Timing chain and it didn%26#039;t have to be replaced in the lifetime of the car. Who is correct?

Thanks.|||1998 Toyota Corolla 1.8L 4-Cylinder Fuel Injection:

This car has a timing chain and a single serpentine belt. As mentioned there are two belts to choose from, standard or with AC.

I%26#039;m wondering if your vehicle information is right. For example, the 1994 Corolla LE does have a timing belt and a single serpentine belt. Otherwise the dealership is pulling your leg.|||i think the dealership would know better, they deal with them everyday. it does have a timing belt and 1 serp belt, on older models they had 3 belts, one for a/c one for power steering, and the other for alternator -water pump|||Are you ready to go to work? If your car has air conditioning it uses a special V belt. If it has air a multi-ribbed belt is used.

The price of each: V belt $32.66 Multi-ribbed or as others call it: Serpentine belt $37.95. Both are Gates products and are available at: autopartswarehouse.com.

Save yourself a lot of money and invest in a serpentine belt removal tool for $22.00 and do this ultra-simple job yourself. The tool relieves the spring pressure on the belt tensioner.

Look carefully at the path of the belt and you will easily find it. It%26#039;s a completely seperate idler pully whish does nothing more than keep the belt tight. Don%26#039;t pay Toyota your hard earned money. If you can%26#039;t swing it an independant mechanic will do it for you for half the price. I%26#039;d do it for the price of the belt.

Forget worrying about a timing belt. Your car does not have one. You have a timing chain.|||Well this all depends on the month your vehicle was built. They do switch over during the middle of a year run. Smartest thing for you to do is actually open your hood and look. Look at the front of the engine, most likely passenger side, and look at the belt(s). Also look behind the belt(s) and if the is a plastic timing cover (most likely black) then it has a timing belt. Be thankful if you have a timing chain. If you have a timing belt and over 60k on your car and have no idea when it was last changed...... Change it soon.

How to change a serpentine belt on a 2004 kia Optima 4cyl?

I wanted to know how would you change a serpentine belt on a 2004 Kia Optima 4cyl and what are the tools need?|||1. Check to see if there is a belt routing diagram sticker under the hood, if not, draw one yourself. The routing can be a major pain in the behind if you forget how the belt goes and nothing to reference it by.

2. A socket with a breaker bar, or sometimes just the breaker bar itself (on a belt tensioner with a square drive to release tension), can be used a lot of times. Sometimes there is no room to get these tools in there and you will have to use a serpentine belt tool to release the tension. It%26#039;s a free loan-a-tool at Autozone. Probably easier just to get one in the first place, while you are getting the belt. It has a nice long handle for good leverage.

3. Release the tension on the belt and hold the tool with one hand, while taking the belt off with the other hand. Release the tool you are using to hold the belt tensioner(slowly, it%26#039;s a strong spring).

4. Put the new belt on using the belt routing diagram. Put it on over every pulley except one. Pull the tensioner loose again and slip the belt over the last pulley and let the tool go. You are pretty much done. Just check to make sure the belt is seated in all the pulleys correctly before starting. I usually %26quot;bump%26quot; the starter a couple of times before starting it, just to help seat the belt.|||Use a box wrench to release belt tension by turning the idler pulley counter clockwise. There should be a decal to show proper routing of the belt. Install new belt and release the pressure on the idler pulley.|||Generally just a breaker bar or ratchet, probably 1/2%26quot; but possibly 3/8%26quot; there is a square hole in the idler bracket, insert there and pull forward on transverse engines, the belt will loosen, pull off the idler pulley.

**** make a sketch of the routing of the belt BEFORE you start.****

My serpentine belt broke yesterday, and I heard it%26#039;s not that hard to change. I changed one a long time ago on a older smaller car, does anyone know is it easy? Or should I have a professional do it?|||Not too hard, you just go by the routing diagram if there%26#039;s not one under the hood you can go to AutoZone or somewhere and they can print one out.|||easy to do, use a breaker bar to loosen the belt tentioner, and slide the new belt in place,,,,,|||do it the right way release tension on idler pulley by lifting up or pushing down follow diagram on radiator shroud

Is it better to change the serpentine belt on a 97 Nissan Sentra or have someone else do it?

I had my oil changed (usually do it myself) and the guys pointed out my serpentine belt is severely frayed. Yikes! Wondering how hard it is for an inexperienced tinkerer to change it themselves.|||You need to take your business elsewhere for your oil changes. The Sentradoesn%26#039;t have a Serpentine belt. Look down there and count the number of belts on your engine.

A Serpentine belt is one belt that runs all your accesories like your power steering pump, A/C compressor and alternator.

You most likely have two or three belts on your engine.

As far as changing a belt on a FWD vehicle, if you have never done anything like it, I suggest having someone you know that can do it, do it for you.

Also, if a belt on the front of your engine breaks, it will not damage your engine, nor will it bend valves. It%26#039;ll just make a bad sound, and your steering, A/C or alternator will be affected. Only the timing belt/chain, which ever the case, will cause internal damage to the engine.|||difficult, and you may damage the engine if you get it on wrong.

And you may damage the engine if it breaks while driving, so don%26#039;t wait. If the engine is a %26quot;interference type%26quot;, it will have bent valves.|||it might damage your engine|||it%26#039;s got two belts and they are pretty easy to change... this car has a timing chain so i%26#039;m assuming you are talking about the accessory belts. just look for the adjusters (one at power steering pump and one around the a/c compressor) but it shouldn%26#039;t be a big job.

How do I change the serpentine belt in my car?

I need to change the serpentine belt in my 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT. Is there a tensioner or how do you adjust the tension on the belt?|||First go to the auto parts store %26amp; get u a chiltons manual that goes with that model but yes there is a Idler tenioner pulley thing u either have to put a wrench on the bolt %26amp; either push down or up %26amp; enough slack to take it off then go back with the new one as the diagram shows u how to put it back on the make sure the belt is in line %26amp; even %26amp; let off of the tensioner pulley %26amp; it will be back tight %26amp; u r ready to go!!!!|||The tensioner is spring loaded to automatically provide the right tension. Just turn it to release the pressure on the belt, put your new belt on, and carefully let the tensioner go back into place.|||Yes there should be a tesioner on it. Mechanics have a special tool, but I always just put a wrench on the tesioner and hold it over while taking off the belt. Most cars have instructions right on the radiator shroud to tell you how to replace the belt.

How Do I Change Serpentine Belt On 2004 Taurus?

On older vehicles you can simply loosen a bolt on the alternator bracket and go from there. This one looks a little more complicated. its a 3.0 liter V-6. Front of engine is on passenger side of car.|||There is a tension pulley that keeps pressure on the belt. All you need to do is hook a ratchett to it and relieve the pressure while you slip the belt off and the new one on. It will be the pulley that is not connected to any kind of alternator or compressor.|||has idler bearing down low put a 3/8 ratchet in and off loads tension remove old r+r let slack out same way|||Special tool required or a 3/8 drive ratchet. Be careful because the tensioner has a lot of force behind it and you could hurt yourself.|||you need to back off the tension-er by using the tools previously mentioned if you are strong enough otherwise you need more leverage. You can borrow a special tool for this purpose from auto Zone or Kragen which will make the job easier. be sure to study the belt pattern before removing so you can have a good idea how the new one goes on. so you just relive the tension, slip off the old belt and then put the new one on.|||take it to the shop-not a job for inexp-or at least buy the manual-

How much to change serpentine belt 98 VW Passat ?

4 CYL|||it is simple task. get belt from auto parts store and do it yourself.

save some money.|||Well depending on which 4 cyl you have you either have 2 serpentine(drive) belts or just 1. The 2 belt engine takes about 1.8 to fix which results in about $150 in labor alone to fix and the 1 belt engine is the same amount of time but I would imagine 2 belts would cost more than 1. So considering serpentine belts are only bout $30-$50 it shouldn%26#039;t cost you more than $250 if you have 2 belts.

How do I change the serpentine belt on my 2003 Kia Sedona?

The manual has no info for me. I need to know how to and something with a diagram would be nice. From visual inspection there are two seperate belts close in area. Are there two serpentine belts or is one of them something else? They look the same just wrapped around different things. I%26#039;m not just a girl and I want to take care of my own vehicle but I am lost about this and I could use some info. I do not want to take my mini into some shop so they can charge me an arm and a leg for something I%26#039;m sure I can do. Above all, make a diagram yourself (no matter how long it takes) of the way the belt is threaded around the tensioner and pulleys. You%26#039;ll be sorry if you don%26#039;t. Some engines require you to get under the crankshaft pulley to thread the new belt into place. When changing the Serpentine Belt on a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am V6, does the entire passenger side Motor Mount need to be entirely removed? Can I just remove a few of the bolts on one side and raise or lower the engine slightly to slip the belt past the motor mount? One of the pulleys is the tensioner pulley which probably has a 1/2 inch (or similar metric) drive insert for a breaker bar to release its tension.|||there should be a diagraphm under the hood to show you the routing of the belt, don%26#039;t try taking the belt off until you have the diagraphm or you will be pulling your hair out, once you find the tensioner it%26#039;s a simple process, just release the tension on it and you will see the belt frees right up so you can take it off and then you just follow the diagraphm to route the new one, pull the tensioner back again and when the belt is where you want it just release the tensioner and your done.

Is changing the serpentine belt on my 03 impala something easy i can do?

Most serpentine belt replacements are very quick and easy, with very few tools required, it typically requires using a wrench or ratchet to releive the pressure on the tensioner while the belt is removed, take special note of the routing of the belt thru all of the pulleys so you do not misroute it on installation, there is usually a belt routing diagram in the engine bay if you should become confused. good luck with your car.|||yes. go on autozones website and register. they have free repair guides and it will show you how to do it. go to the section for engine mechanical components for your car. you can also buy the belt from them for around 20 bucks.|||If you%26#039;re a woman you can forget about it. and please do not spray wd40 on the belt this will only make the belt slip more. use belt dressing if you spray anything on it.|||the serpintine belt is ALWAYS removed before you can remove the timing belt.

How do I change the belts on a 2002 Toyota Sienna V6?

I was expecting to find a single serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner pulley. I have changed serpentine belts on many models with no problem. But this Sienna has two belts, not one. One belt drives the power steering pump. The second belt drives the alternator and A/C. I don%26#039;t see a tensioner pulley on either belt. Do these belts work like old-fashioned V-belts belts where you tension them by loosening something (like the alternator) and then using a pry bar to tighten the belt? I can barely see the power steering pump so it looks pretty tight, I welcome advice from anybody who knows this model. Thanks.|||loosen the 14mm bolt on top of alternator. loosen 12mm bolt below alternator sitting sideways. adjust belt tension with 10mm bolt running through previous 12mm.

loosen 12mm bolt on top of power steering pump. underneath vehicle loosen a 12mm bolt below p/s pump pull on belt to relieve tension, and pry carefully to increase tension.

a bit of advice when reinstalling belts, the belt tension has to be just so, too tight and you will wreck the bearings in both pump and alt., too loose and the belts will squeal they have to be just right.

How to make enough room to change serpentine belt?

There%26#039;s a bunch of stuff in my way. How do mechanics do it? What should I remove that will let me get a better access to tackle this project?|||I am afraid you do not really know how to replace serpentine belt on your car according to your statement.

Nothing or only thing you need to remove is the engine top cover. That is for more room to reach the belt.

It is a rather simple work, about ten minutes work if you do not need to replace the tensioner. I suppose your car is rather new and the tensioner should be in good working condition.

Better draw a picture how the belt goes over each wheel since I guess you do not do this from time to time. Or you can bear in mind how it goes.

Stand in front of your car, use a 19 mm long box wrench or a 19mm socket and a long rachet to hold the nut shape point on the tensioner (Use a light and observe carefully. You should notice that this nut is not really a nut; it is a nut shape part of the whole metal piece of the tensioner. Further to the back is the real nut that holds the tensioner to the engine body.), pull it backwards or towards you. The tensioner will go downwards and thus releasing the belt; at this time, use your left hand remover the belt off the flywheel near the alternator. Then you can pull it out easily.

Remember, observe carefully how the belt goes before remove it.

Installation is the reverse of removing.

I am afraid it is easier to show how to than explain it clearly.

Hope I can help you a bit.

Good luck.|||AH yes the pesky items on top of the engines plague Mechanics too you know.

Have you tryed to jack the car up put it on stands? you might have a better chance of coming up from the bottom to install the belt. Does anyone have a step by step guide to changing the serpentine belt on a 1994 Vauxhall Cavalier?

Your local library has auto repair manuals. Make sure to make a diagram of how the belt goes around all the pulleys and belt tensioner BEFORE you remove the belt. Otherwise you won%26#039;t remember how it was installed. Take a photograph with a digital camera. You%26#039;ll need about a 1/2 inch (metric?) socket drive that fits into the side of the tensioner pulley to rotate it and release the tension. Use duct tape to temporarily hold the belt in place under the engine damper pulley because it will keep coming off while your trying to thread the belt through the other pulleys.|||The best thing for you to do if you know how to work on a car is too go to a parts store and buy a book for the type car that you have. The Crank you wouldn%26#039;t be able to by hand but that shouldn%26#039;t be a issue. Anyways if all goes well then you should have a diagram under the hood right in front of the radiator. Should I go ahead and change the Serpentine belts on my car? How much?

I have a 2001 Mazda Protege. Whenever I start the car, there is a chirping noise. A mechanic told me it was 2 belts that need replacing: the Serpentine belts. He recommended that I change them soon. But it has been 3 months since then and I have yet to change the belts. My car has been fine. It still makes the chirp noise when I start my car but runs ok. I%26#039;m leaving on a trip soon, traveling about 500 miles (round trip). Will my car make it or should I change the belt before hand. The mechanic wanted to charge me $110 for the replacement of the Serpentine belts (including installation), does that sound about right?

Thanks, guys!|||Yes, I recommend you get them changed before you go! If a belt breaks it can leave you stranded and cause other damage to sensors or wiring when it breaks! ok so we have a 1996 chevy beretta, (v-6 3.1L) and the serpentine belt has shredded away, still there some what but needs replacing, anyone have tips\suggestions on changing them the easiest or better way? or should i take it to a garage?

thanks|||The easiest way to do it is to follow the pattern of the old belt if possible most cars have a diagram of the belt pattern the easiest way I have found is to put it on all of the pullies except the alternator and then loosen the tensioner and put the belt on the alternator but make sure it is under the tensioner like it is supposed to be good luck

I want to try changing the 2 serpentine belts on my 2003 Dodge Intrepid.?

The employee at AutoZone says that all I likely have to do is loosen a bolt for the tensioner, take the belt off and put a new one on, then re-tighten the tensioner.

Is that all there is too it? Is is a tight space that I%26#039;ll be working in or should I expect the car to give me some resistance? I%26#039;m pretty handy with tools and working on my car changing brakes and stuff, just so you know my experience level...

Thanks!|||Click below will give you step by step instructions. Good Luck.|||I have never changed a serpentine belt on a 2003 Dodge Intrepid, but I have changed plenty of them on other cars. It might be a little tight but normally it is pretty easy to do. I put a long wrench on the tensioner to pull it back and pull the belt off. route the belt back onto the pulleys the way they came off. There should be a belt routing diagram sticker some where under the hood. Find this sticker before you take the belt off and can%26#039;t figure out how it goes back on. If you can%26#039;t find it take a digital picture of it to make sure you don%26#039;t forget how it goes. Put it back on and wrench the tensioner back to let the belt go back on. That%26#039;s it.|||look on the front of the vehicle under the hood for a diagram of the belt routing before you start this job or it will get real confusing, if its not their go buy a haynes repair manual ,because it has good illustrations of how to do this and many other jobs you might want to do on that car,its not hard to do but most people forget where and how the belt routes and wind up coming on here for answers, and a repair book with pictures beats any answer we can give you,and if your nice to them they might even change it for you for free, good luck and have good new years, and be safe,|||Your vehicle does not have spring loaded tensioner for belt tension but an adjustable pulley as the person from Autozone stated. It%26#039;s a matter of loosing the pulley, removing the belt and re-installing. This task is not difficult and if you are handy with tools (metric) you should have no problems. Good luck|||look on the front of the vehicle under the hood for a diagram of the belt routing before you start this job or it will get real confusing, if its not their go buy a haynes repair manual ,because it has good illustrations of how to do this and many other jobs you might want to do on that car,its not hard to do but most people forget where and how the belt routes and wind up coming on here for answers, and a repair book with pictures beats any answer we can give you, good luck and have good new years, and be safe,|||Check for a belt diagram on the hood before you start. If it has no belt diagram make one yourself. If the rad is very close put a piece of card board between the rad and the belts so you don%26#039;t knock a hole in the rad. Match the new belts with the old ones .
